I'm content with my my 720p television also. So to help answer you question, there are quite a few things we gotta know.

1) Size of room

2) what you hope to get from the system, games, movies, and music more than likely, but how much of each???

3) Budget everyone has one, and although more $$ doesn't necessarily mean "better" I don't want to recommend a system for $150 that you won't be happy with, but I also don't want to say "oh, you should get the Thiel C3.7's for a larger room" if you have no desire to spend that much loot...

4) Do you have any existing equipment (other than the T.V. and game consoles..... like an audio/video receiver? a pair of any speakers? etc.) You'd be surprised, an older pair of bookshelf speakers will make good surrounds, and allow you to focus more of the budget on the mains, but we'll get to that.

I too am looking for some help with a home theatre setup. I have a 32' samsung for my TV....it is a 720p. I have a bdp 1200 for my blu player. I am looking to do a complete upgrade later on (have to save to get a house). But i want to get the most out of my current set up. I have no receiver or speakers. My budget is around $500 or so, i could go a little higher.

For $500, I'd get one of the onkyo HDMI ready receivers that people have been saying can be had for $299, then get some speakers for $100 each (I know you're probably looking for a whole 5.1, but why buy a whole 5.1 now, but to get the most out of your $$ this is the way to go) for speakers around that range, I'd look at Wharfedale Diamond 9.2's, Monitor Audio R90 , JMLab SIB. NHT Classic 2's and infinity Beta 20's, all will push the budget a little ($150 each maybe?)

Look into those, and one day down the road, get a couple mains, and matching center, and move these to the surrounds, and lastly, add a sub....

Just my recommendation for anyone looking for a budget system. Everything is relative really... I have speaker stands that cost more than some Home-Theater-in-the-box deals, but there are plenty of people who have cables that cost more than my whole system, T.V. included!!! The most important thing is to buy quality once, not crap repeatedly.

In that range, you're probably better off going with a "home theater in a box" (you'll see the acronym HTIB for that) for the short run. Sony and Onkyo make nice sets.

They're not loud, but they're clear. You can go that route for now, and upgrade after you see what fits in your new home.

Here's the Onkyo:

And a nice Sony:

Avoid the ones with the DVD player/carousel, you're better off having the funds invested in the speakers and receiver. It's a good starting point.

I just bought the Onkyo 605 at Amazon for $379 and I bought Polk RM6750 speakers at Circuit City for $193 out the door.

Remember, you don't need big floor-standers to get big sound..... good bookshelfs will do just fine too! even the little speakers I have for my surrounds (2nd pic.) have good bass, and are VERY clear. If you can swing those, I'd suggest looking up the B&W 686's those are my surrounds, and they sound great even if you use them as mains, or the 685's which are a little larger cabinet, and produce more bass etc.
