Through its purchases of many different companies and film and television libraries, MGM has greatly enhanced its film and TV holdings.

Excuse moi. I still read threads where people are confused about what "MGM" actually owns. There did not seem to be a MGM thread under the STUDIO SECTION for reference, so I thought having this info as first line would be helpful. Sorry, I'll have the moderator delete the post and will think twice about trying to relay any useful information on this site.

A few clarifications:
MGM only owns MGM films post-1986. They own a fraction of pre-1952 UA, but most of post-1952 UA. They own post-1981 Orion, except for "Amadeus" and "Lionheart", which are owned by WB. They own Filmways TV titles, except for "the Beverly Hillbillies" and "Petticoat Junction". There are other exceptions as well. Most of the titles we associate with the prime years of MGM are actually owned by Warner Bros. via its 1996 acquisition of Turner, which bought MGM/UA in 1984 and then sold it, but kept the library. This includes pre-May 1986 MGM Film and TV Productions (but not most UA) and it also includes most of the RKO library. This is why such titles as "The Wizard of Oz" (originally MGM) and "King Kong (1933)(originally RKO)" have been released on Blu-ray by WB. Last edited by ZoetMB; 06-19-2014 at 05:35 PM. |

There are always exceptions. GIRLS TOWN (1959) was an MGM release, but it seems to neither be with MGM nor Warner nor Republic these days. Some feel that Lionsgate has it, which makes no sense to me.

It's probably public domain. Lionsgate did release some public domain titles in the 1990's.

It'd be nice to have an RKO checklist as well. |
