Default PS3 doesn't remember "where I parked a BD movie"

sorry if this has been asked before, but the search function didn't help me here ...

well, my ages-old dvd player even remembers the position of a DVD if I remove it from the tray (!) and reinsert it after playing 10 others!

The PS3 however even forgets the position when I turn the thing off - not to mention if I remove the BD from the tray ... is this some lingering problem with the firmware or is there a trick to work around this annoying issue?

It IS VERY annoying, as I usually do NOT watch entire movies. Mostly in 2 or 3 stages ... also with watching TV series, it's nasty - say, 4 episodes on one DVD. Have to go through the tedious startup menu each time ...

Thanks for any hints

Using the triangle button on the xmb screen lets you resume from your last point, but not if you power it off and then back on. It lets you choose to play (from where you were) or play from beginning. I too wish sony would give it a resume function, because it is the only shortcoming the ps3 has that is annoying.

Yep, if I turn it off, I'm screwed --- I really find it incredible that one doesn't read more about this issue - or does no one care? No one watches TV series on a PS3? Everyone watches only WHOLE movies, no overnight breaks? Can't believe that ...

I'm quite satisfied with the PS3, but this issue alone brings the rating down from 5 stars to 3 for me ... usability = sucks! Especially since this is ancient technology ... nothing new ... as I wrote above, my old DVD player (also Sony btw!!!!!!!!) even remembered the position if you removed the DVD (!!!!) from the tray and played another!

If I sit down to watch a movie or TV episodes, I commit until the completion of said material. Once credits roll, then I will stop and eject the disc. For me, personally, the movie experience is ruined by taking a break in the middle. It is not conducive in maintaining your emotional/spiritual investment that keep me enthralled with the plot. TV episodes on the other hand are designed to complete at a point that is both satisfying and anticipation building. I can live with stopping after an episode in the middle of the disc as the very design of its production lends itself nicely to entertainment model.

I was considering starting a thread with this question today...good timing.

Yeah, once again...if I turn off the console, my place is lost.

I too sometimes watch a movie in "shifts" but mostly because of my work schedule and theatre rehearsal. I only do this with movies I've already seen though, since with a new movie I want to really sit down and make it through the whole thing.

with this dvd player i used to have that was built into my old TV i had before i got a HDTV if i let the dvd stay inside the tv even if it was off it will still remember where i left off but if i took it out i would be screwed. but i do like for instance in spidey blu-ray you get to be able to go back to the main menu, scene selections, extras, or languages while watching the movie. and plus being able to rewind or fast forward in a better way the only part about that i didnt like is that it wouldnt let me use the left arrow key or right arrow key to do that on my ps3 controller. but i do hate that if i want to keep my spot i either just not turn the ps3 off or just leave it on until i want to watch some more

I agree with the original. It would be the easiest fix to the firmware. It already has plenty of memory it's just the simple task of a small firmware upgrade. I'd like to make some noise to Sony so they can fix what they overlooked. It's embarrassing even if friends are over and they love the blu-rays and the PS3, but then even they all notice when it won't resume.

Resume function would be a nice touch, however it's not a deal breaker for me since I watch everything right through.

I would like to have a resume feature on the PS3, I work from home and constantly get busy for long periods of time, It would be nice if I could turn off the PS3 and then start it up again where I left off.

+1

I can't listen to only half a movie, for me it's near impossible. When I start a movie, or a TV show, I'm glue to the TV until the end of it (or the episode for a TV show). For me, it's like being hungry and eating only half of a hod-dog, or peeing and stopping in the middle . I can do it, but wow it demands me a lot

Honestly I would think that would be annoying, I frequently will pop a Blu ray in as soon as I receive it, going through some scenes to check out the PQ, (if its a movie I saw in the theatre, or have seen before) I would HATE it if I powered down and then when I went to watch it with someone else and it goes in the middle of the movie and I have to back track to the beginning. THATS WHY WE HAVE SCEENE SELECTIONS in the form of a POP up menu that you can access while in the movie. This in my oppinion is simply the coolest feature of Hi Def, when your with someone that is'nt accustomed to seeing the Pop up menu that obviously some of us take for granted THEY ARE STUNNED, my dad will still look at me each time I activate the Pop/up menu as if I'm doing a magic trick, hahaha.

The PS3 should certainly do everything a standalone does (meaning that it should resume). It's touted as a powerful computing device ... but it can't do everything a "simple" standalone can do? Not good. And besides, um, it's a feature I'd like and I have the PS3....

Heck, now that I'm thinking about it. Because of its power, the PS3 should do everything a standalone does PLUS other cool stuff that I can't think of right now; the machines certainly have the memory and power to pull off all sorts of *****in' stuff.

I have too much work to commit three hours non-stop to a movie ... that's practically impossible ...

... and for TV, if you stop after one episode, the problem remains - you have to reboot the DVD the next time, cause the PS3's firmware is too stupid to remember ...

I wouldn't object if that were some new gimmick, but hey - a ten year old DVD player could do that ...

Why not just leave it on? If it is ventilated properly, should not be an issue.

Another issue I have not seen listed about this is with titles using BDJ... for instance the Pirates movies, they won't start from where you left off either... but on the up side, how 'bout that feature on the spidey disks, where you can add your own personal bookmarks, and it holds them in memory till you clear them, even holds them after you eject the disk.

Edit...

Five stars downgraded to 3???
Give me a freakin' break...
Your complaint was kind of legit till you made that comment, then you lost credability.

Seriously, how long does it take to look up the scene in the scene selection menu> Plus you get to look at the cool interactive menus.
It is such a minor thing that I would not even expect them to fix it. If they did, great, if not.. so what? It works great, I have no problem with it, plus I never turn off my PS3 anyways, I let it run folding@home all night and all day. It does not overheat and it seems to be doing a very good job on there. I am in the top 25 (or was at one time...).
Since I don't bother to turn it off, it always remembers my place.

...we're talking about a basic feature that is on most stand alone blu-ray players, and also most DVD players.

It's not a matter of being too lazy to go to the pop up menu and do a scene selection (which you then have to fast forward to exactly where you were). It's about having a simple feature that should have been considered in the beginning. There are a lot of little things that developers overlook in their products, and hopefully they are fixed.

Another example is that the PS3 upscales DVDs, but does not upscale SD content on a Blu-ray disc.

I think that feature is coming with the next fimware update.

If Sony wants people to believe that the PS3 can be used as a stand alone player, it should at least have the standard features of all other new and old players, including remembering where you left off. Now if this feature never comes, I won't lose any sleep over it, but it would be really nice to have.

Most newer titles are coming with this feature. Resuming should be easier then...
