I prefer PCM 5.1 to TrueHD 5.1. I compared them both on this and 300 BD, and I preferred PCM 5.1 in both cases. By the way, if your setup for all the HD audio stuff, listen to the scene towards the end of Spiderman3..the scene with the Venom final fight. The cage of poles he imprisons Venom in .....the tuning fork type aural soundwave he uses to remove the creature...it sounds AWESOME in my house! Totally resonates and sounds gorgeous. I love that scene. Awesome in audio and video!

Since you have a PS3 it will most likely be the PCM track. Those that have a player that can send the TrueHD track will pick it for the most part. Or that is how things are ending up now.

I think you will find many here that have the capabilities to listen to the TrueHD track that will say it sounds better. And I am one of them. |

BTW, the PS3 decodes TrueHD and passes it as pcm just fine. |

Please remember that more bits on the audio codec mean nothing if the original digital soundtrack only has "x" bits. Therefore, a 16 bit soundtrack will not be improved by encoding it with 24 bit Dolby TrueHD. If the original soundtrack is 24 bit, then the TrueHD encode can sound better than a 16 bit PCM track (more fidelity to the source.)
Now, does anyone know if the Spiderman 3 soundtrack is 16 or 24 bits? Lee |

If the TrueHD system is operating in a linear, "as-designed" fashion, the 24 bit track should sound superior when level-matched. If dialog normalization is messing up things more than helping, this issue should be addressed in the mixing/mastering arena.
There may come a time when the additional space saved by using a compressed audio track will come in handy for BD. I hope that the engineers take a serious look at the reasons for comments favoring less-accurate PCM over the reconstructed 24-bit tracks (such comments seem to be all over the web currently). Quote:
Thanks for answering the bit question, everybody. Lee |
