Default Spider-Man 3 Audio

What is the better track on this BD? DTHD or PCM?

I prefer PCM 5.1 to TrueHD 5.1. I compared them both on this and 300 BD, and I preferred PCM 5.1 in both cases. By the way, if your setup for all the HD audio stuff, listen to the scene towards the end of Spiderman3..the scene with the Venom final fight. The cage of poles he imprisons Venom in .....the tuning fork type aural soundwave he uses to remove the creature...it sounds AWESOME in my house! Totally resonates and sounds gorgeous. I love that scene. Awesome in audio and video!

Since you have a PS3 it will most likely be the PCM track. Those that have a player that can send the TrueHD track will pick it for the most part. Or that is how things are ending up now.

"300" was 16/48 on both PCM and TrueHD.

Spidey 3 the TrueHD is 24/48 while the PCM is 16/48

What was the original soundtrack: 16 or 24? If it was 24, it's possible that the Dolby TrueHD could sound better (as long as the dialog normalization doesn't mess up the fidelity to the source).

I think you will find many here that have the capabilities to listen to the TrueHD track that will say it sounds better. And I am one of them.

Even those of us who have the player decode it internally and send it as PCM to the receiver? (Panny DMP-BD10A)

So, does this mean that the TrueHD should sound better if I have a capable receiver?

No, people say that it MIGHT sound better if passed bitstream and your receiver decodes it. I say it will sound the same and it is simply unzipping the audio if you will.

BTW, the PS3 decodes TrueHD and passes it as pcm just fine.

Please remember that more bits on the audio codec mean nothing if the original digital soundtrack only has "x" bits. Therefore, a 16 bit soundtrack will not be improved by encoding it with 24 bit Dolby TrueHD. If the original soundtrack is 24 bit, then the TrueHD encode can sound better than a 16 bit PCM track (more fidelity to the source.)

Now, does anyone know if the Spiderman 3 soundtrack is 16 or 24 bits?

And I think both of you are just proving what I said in post 3 here.

I find that people who prefer 16-bit PCM over 24-bit TrueHD probably do so because of the additional "edginess" or brightness over the smoother, more natural sound.

If the TrueHD system is operating in a linear, "as-designed" fashion, the 24 bit track should sound superior when level-matched. If dialog normalization is messing up things more than helping, this issue should be addressed in the mixing/mastering arena.

There may come a time when the additional space saved by using a compressed audio track will come in handy for BD. I hope that the engineers take a serious look at the reasons for comments favoring less-accurate PCM over the reconstructed 24-bit tracks (such comments seem to be all over the web currently).

It's possible that the sound from certain reduced-bit PCM tracks acts as an unsuspected "equalizer" to liven up the audio in systems/rooms that would support such differences. Many consumers favor boosted treble and midbass, a situation stemming from living with car stereos and mid-fi gear. I'm not criticizing anyone here, just stating that A/B comparisons can be deceiving when a less-accurate reproduction grabs our attention a bit easier. Boosted highs also contribute to the illusion of "crispness", which helps lesser systems provide clearer dialog and low-level detail.

Thanks for answering the bit question, everybody.
