Default How long a Blue Ray disc can be ĻAlifeĻ

I have a lot of films of my two doughters and my whole family, I would like to keep all this movie for 40 or 50 or 100 years, I would like my doughters when they get older, ( they are now 2 and 3 years Old ) they watch the films of themself whey they were very little. I think the disc,if properly stored, will last that long but in 50 years I'm sure blu-ray or hd dvd won't be the most used format any longer. I think they have high-def camcorders coming out one of those w/ a 50 gig bd-r would be great for storing high-def home movies.

Blu-ray Recordables likely will have a shelf life that will be similar to DVD Recordables. Which is somewhere in the 5-10 year range or more depending on your storage location (no sun, proper climate). The real thing about the format though is that because it is digital you can simply pull it out in 8 years then make a perfect 1 for 1 copy, and start the clock all over again. The ability to make a 100% perfect digital copy is the key to the longevity of the format. Just protect the discs well and make backups over time.

Buy good media. The better the media, the longer it lasts. El-Cheapo recorable media are cheap for a reason. So be wary of long term storage ( I had Comp USA DVD-Rs that were unreadable after just one year, which I know worked fine when I first burned them) on any media whether DVD, HD-DVD, or Blu -Ray that seems too cheap. It however does not have to be the most expensive. Just browse forums to see which brand gives less problems.

I think everyone is forgetting that there is a fundamental difference between the storage medium used on Blu-ray in comparison to Red laser discs, The Recordable media in a red laser disc is an organic dye, which is very sensitive to adverse heat and sunlight. Bluray recordable media, however, is a combination of a layer of silicon and copper which is bonded together during the burning process, this alloy is much more resilient to the hazardous conditions which has been the bane of many a red laser disc. Some Accelerated lifespan reports have shown bluray to have a shelf life of One Hundred to One Hundred Fifty years or more, provided it is stored with at least some degree of discretion (ie no leaving them out on your back porch or under the driver seat of your car 8) )
