I'm sure that no HD DVD exclusive owner is happy with being unable to buy movies from the Blu-ray exclusive studios. A Blu-ray exclusive owner, on the other hand, can be content with the knowledge that by remaining exclusive they are supporting the stronger format, and fighting for the long term good of high definition media, which requires there to be only one format for long term success.
Once profile 1.1 Blu-ray players are available at a reasonable price, I believe many HD DVD exclusive owners will go neutral. They are being held back at the moment by a reluctance to buy a player that is not future-proof, however this will change in the very near future. Once these formerly HD DVD exclusive owners have acquired a Blu-ray player, the next choice they have to make is which format to purchase neutral releases on. At first, they will have the majority of their library in HD DVD, and may prefer to keep that as their favoured format. However, once they have experienced the superior quality of the optimised Blu-ray exclusive releases, they will become frustrated with the lesser quality of HD DVD, and decide to start buying neutral releases on Blu-ray to support the better quality format. The final stage is when they decide that HD DVD is surely the losing format, and don't want to buy any more HD DVDs, even from the HD DVD exclusive studios. Perhaps they will switch to renting HD DVDs rather than buying, while still buying Blu-ray. Eventually they may become sufficiently convinced of the need for a single format that they cease all support for HD DVD and join the Blu-ray exclusive owners in the fight for a single high definition format that offers the best audio and video quality. It's a gradual process, but step by step, with many owners making several small steps over a period of time, this is how Blu-ray can win the format war. Even if some people don't go all the way to becoming Blu-ray exclusive, every step that every owner takes along the path I've described will help Blu-ray. It's hard to see, on the other hand, why anyone would travel very far along the path in the opposite direction. Last edited by NutsAboutPS3; 11-17-2007 at 10:51 AM. |

I think once the Dual format players hit stores that will help the transition more.
