I'm not sure if it's even possible, but I know movies like Shrek the Third on HD DVD have web-enabled content and I'm wondering if BLU could do it (and if any movies are coming with it).
Maybe WE-content isn't required for what I'd like. On Shred the Third, there's a fact download. When you enable it and watch the movie, facts (about 300 total) pop up. IMHO it's a fun feature for your second time through the movie--if you really like the film. I suppose it could just be on the disc. So, anything like this coming? |

If I am not mistaken, pop up fact type things have been available on some releases for a while.
Web enabled content, not sure though I do not see why not. I will say that in I do not know how many years that dvd has had web enabled content I have never once used it and do not see anything that would make me do it in the first place. DO you know why HD has to have web enabled content? Because it is things that they could not fit onto the disk. Blu doesn't have that problem. Do not make me go online to get shit, put it on my damned disk. Sue me, I am lazy. |

Right, I know it's a disc issue for HD DVD. But, it's a great way to let movies "live" on. And I'd love to see BLU releases use it.
I'm slowly becoming more of an extras guy now. Grrr. I never cared until I watched the extra on Sky Captain (how they made the film). It was very interesting. And the fact pops on Shrek (eww, dirty word) is cool. Oh, and by web-enabled, I was talking about doing stuff like this on the player and not having to put the disc in your computer. ![]() |

With the space of Blu, one set of features. Close encounters has three theatrical versions and tons and tons of extras(2 dics), How many hours of extras can one watch anyways? Already Cars and ratatoullie have games/extras that rival the best extras HD DVD has, and not even 1.1. I think the future is good for Blu-ray and its features web-enabled or not. |

It's not so much video, it's fun stuff.
For instance, Shrek (dirty word again) has a Shrek coloring book coming via web content. Okay, yes, I'm not going to color. But my kids will. My point is that with disc content, it's now or never. There's no adding after the fact. The web-enabled feature allows studios to do more and to evolve. I'm just wondering about the "option" to do it and not trying to discuss what format is better or this or that. If nothing else, it could be a way to allow studios to fix or add to extra items on the disc. |

Like I said, it just gives them an extra option during the "selling" phase. And I'll I want to really know is whether or not BLU can/will have the option. Now, if we could just get HD extras and not 480p leftovers, we'd be perfect. ![]() |

Even profile1.1 only player can handle web based contents downloaded via PC to SD card etc. This fact was comfirmed by Panasonic and DENON.

my speculation:
profile 2.0 will eventually be standard/mandatory for enthusiasts, high quality video and audio is enough reason to buy into hdm. in order to appeal to the masses like j6p, interactivity is key. right now the war is with hd-dvd so the focus is on things like studio support, ce support, shelf space, etc when hd-dvd folds, the war will be with sd-dvd and convincing j6p to upgrade. that's when interactivity will become much more prominent in titles and profile 2.0 will become mandatory either by BDA decree or simply by consumer expectation |

the common answer would be because it's a great way to advertise other products. 1) the trailers on a dvd can be updated for current times (ever watch an older dvd and see a trailer for a movie "coming soon to theatres" but it's already out on dvd?) 2) the biography pages can be updated. someone rents "pretty woman" and click on julia robert's info page. it shows her movie career but also says "Charlie Wilson's War" coming out in 2008 3) disney decides to do spinoff movie or tv show of sidekick from one of their movies XYZ. they upload a game for XYZ focusing on the sidekick to get kids more interested in that character. etc etc oh, and because blu-ray is more programmable than hd-dvd and requires more on-board storage for profile 2.0 than hd-dvd it makes the possibilites quite endless, so they'll likely come up with things we're not thinking about today. hd-dvd may brag about being feature complete, but it's also feature limited. in the long term blu-ray will show itself to be the better choice for interactivity just like it's already showing itself to be the better choice for audio&video quality (video bitrate being dipped into, audio languages being cut out, discs being filled to the brim with just the movie, etc) Last edited by mov9384ie; 11-18-2007 at 06:47 AM. |

who is going to pay for hosting online content indefinitely ?
if i buy that titles 3-5 years after release from discount bin, am i still able to access the pop up or get a cross-out box ? it's just a gimmick to let them brag about useless features. |

Profile 2.0 players should have this feature, but then again, the Ethernet port is not a mandatory option, so it will be up to the manufacture to have this feature needed to take advantage. |

Instead of people complaining/asking about web-enabled content, I'd like to see more suggestions for what exactly you want to use it for. The studios are certainly not going to bother using it unless they see a use-case that would fit.

Well, here's a fun fact about Shrek the Third on HD DVD that I saw.
So the movie was playing with the Shrek facts pops thing (web-enabled download content). Part way through the movie it shut off and the screen said something about not having a license to play. Well gee, that sucks. ![]() |
