Default Sidonia no Kishi / Knights of Sidonia coming to Netflix Summer 2014

July 2014 Update: Official Netflix trailer for season 1

The show is now also posted in Netflix ("coming July 4th"), and announced as a Netflix Original Series (wonder if Netflix has co-financed? Or probably just an exclusivity agreement)

http://www.netflix.com/WiMovie/70301578?locale=en-US

Past updates:

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news...in-summer-2014

This is not a new news per say (the article is from late 2012, time of the deal with Netflix), but Summer 2014 is right around the corner, the series has started in Japan on time (April 10th was the first episode), and SnK is one of my favorite mangas EVER

Do you like Macross (Robotech for many in the US) and/ or Battlestar Galactica?

Do you like Lovecraft's horror and Giger's visuals?

Imagine ... the child of those three...

Summary from ANN:
Quote:
It's been a thousand years since the Gauna, a strange alien race with no known method of communication, destroyed the solar system. A portion of humanity managed to escape using enormous "seed ships" like the Sidonia, which have allowed them to maintain the population while drifting through space. Nagate Tanikaze is a young man who has been raised deep in the bowels of the ship. When he goes into training to pilot the huge robotic weapons known as Gardes, Nagate is entrusted with piloting the legendary unit known as Tsugumori. Nagate and his fellow pilots put their lives on the line against the Gauna, in the ultimate battle for the survival of humanity.
I try to follow every scan release, and have started to buy the Kindle edition (somptuous, just very slow to release), and I cannot wait for Netflix's broadcast.

Hoping that a Blu Ray edition will follow afterwards...

Official release date on Netflix was announced a few weeks back, it's for July 4th! (interesting choice)

I'm a HUGE fan of Nihei's Blame! (which badly needs its own anime adaptation--that ONA thing isn't enough), and while I've only read the first volume of Knights of Sidonia, I liked it tremendously: really maintains his signature cyberpunk and bio horror style while adding a bit of a hard sci-fi spin.

I don't know how I missed that this show existed, but I'll definitely be tuning in.

If you liked the first volume, you're in for a treat. It gets exponentially better as it goes

"YAMS"... Yet Another Mecha Series. *sigh* What is it with all these shows that people actually like them? Can't we ever get any good sci-fi anime without silly Giant Robots?!? Gah!

Quite honestly I'm surprised you don't like Mecha. It would seem to be right up your alley. Stuff like Evangelion, Code Geass and Broken Blade are some of the finest series I've seen.

No, it's not a mecha series. Yes, there is giant robot piloting involved, but the mechs are generally just treated as standard-issue military equipment. The mecha piloting isn't even a primary focus of the plot. This isn't like Gundam where every frame as a special design and abilities (or "personality", like some other shows manage to do *cough*EurekaSeven*cough*).

I'd call Code Geass more mecha than Sidonia, and I don't consider Code Geass a mecha either.
Edit: I know most people disagree on that viewpoint of CG.

Really? I'd never consider that a mecha show (elements of the genre? sure. A fit in the genre? hell no.)

This Knights of Sidonia show looks interesting, I think I'll give it a try.

I actually added that as I read the post by madlost1 immediately above mine where he names Code Geass as a mecha to check out, and I have to admit it meets most of the criteria I gave for a "mecha series" -- the special one-off machine designs of varying abilities, pilots loyal to "their" machines, the mecha prominence in the OP animations, the battle scenes. It really seems like a mecha show in ways.

But I tend to judge more based on what percentage of the series focuses on mechas themselves. Geass spent more time on politics, drama, and school-life comedy, making the series enjoyable even by people don't like Mecha -- so it's not a mecha in my personal opinion.

I actually agree on both counts but it definitely was the first thing that came to mind when I was thinking of Mecha.

Lol, OK, well I was just doing a little "instigating" there, and not actually trolling - thus all the smileys after my comment... you guys know me well enough. Got the thread hoppin', didn't I?!

Seriously though, I was actually going to say that SoK looks pretty interesting, except for the Mech. But if the mecha is as Seafox says, more of a background element and used militarily, I might be able to overlook it. Hey, I did actually buy *cough*EurekaSeven*cough* (for the romance part, anyway - haven't watched it yet, so...). Can't hurt checking this one out...

So, back to instigating - Most giant mecha I just can't stomach, it's too ridiculous and far-fetched - a bunch of giant's fighting giants... so I'm definitely not an Eva fan in the least. I guess it all reminds me too much of Transformers, which to me is the most stupid thing ever gestated within a human's mind - next to the Power Rangers, that is. Oh, and Teletubbies, lol. I don't care for Godzilla movies either, for the same reason - just more giants fighting giants. *yawn* It seems like there's so much of that in anime - hasn't the idea been overused to the point of boredom or nausea yet?!? I've had to endure it ever since UltraMan aired in the 1960's - 50 years of the same old idea, lol...

Second season has been officially greenlit. There will be a preview event screening the first two episodes in November.

So I'm assuming that can only help push a US BD release through, right?
I'm really eyeing the Japanese releases on Amazon.

Are they subbed? I don't have time to look right now, headed off to work.

Good point! I just looked at Vol.1, and didn't see anything, in the description, that mentioned subtitles.

If they don't have a "Languages:" and a "Subtitles:" line in the description, then generally it's not English Friendly. I just looked, and they don't. I do wish they'd add subs to more Japanese releases, I would buy more if they did. I'd have to take out a second mortgage, but at least my media shelves would be overflowing...

Funny, because as a huge fan of Mecha, I find the amount produced in anime lately to be very scarce. Specially when compared to all the rom-coms and/ or horror ones with large helpings of tasteless fan service.

This being said, I don't really think of SnK as a Mecha series either. Sure you have your semi variable mechas (but they make more sense in the way of flight vs combat. They do not fully transform), and your "test machines" for the "elite pilot" (very Macross in this way), but the elements of Futuristic Military/ Horror are much more present imo. Also, you can tell that the Mechas, while looking decent, are not where the artist has put a lot of time. They look all rather generic, but also probably more realistic in this way.

You can tell the man loves his monsters (and Tsumugi is awesome )
