Question 'RGB' or 'Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr' BD/DVD Video Output Format (HDMI) option?

While watching Blu-Rays on the PS3 the picture changes noticeably when in the video settings you change it to RGB instead of the other option y/something. Which setting should this be on? I have a sharp Aquos 1080p. Also there is a option for limited or full??

RGB gives you full spectrum of color, more vibrant, etc. I turned it on and makes the picture that much greater.

I agree the RGB just makes the colors pop out. Sometimes things can look a bit dark but you can always adjust your brightness on your Tv a bit.

HOLD THE MUSIC, folks.

The correct answer is: it depends.

Some TVs handle RGB input better. Others (and I would hazard a guess and say a significant fraction of newer HDTVs) handle Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr more gracefully.

Take a look at the effect on this user's display in a discussion over at AVS: He had terrible banding due to RGB input, which pretty much vanished when he changed to Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...=936406&page=5

Doing a generic recommendation for RGB is a VERY bad idea, as you can see if you peruse that thread (with pictorial proof from myself and others).

He's right. If one was always better than the other the option wouldn't be there in the first place.

Its experimental. Most use RGB/Full like I do. However i'm using a brand new TV. I would imagine its the older ones without HDMI that would require the usage of other options.

Does anyone have a newer Samsung LED DLP that can recommend one of the settings? I believe I have it on "Full" and "Automatic" right now (which I think defaults to Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr).

You can actually change the option while a BD plays in the background using one of the TRIANGLE menu icons.

Anyone tested this out on the Sony XBR4 series? Which option is better?

The RGB settings (full) will appear to have more vibrant colors(over saturated) but you loose detail in dark scenes.

I'm using Full RGB with my Panasonic TX-32LXD700. Looks excellent by eye, but can any confirm whether or not the Panasonic is compatible? Thanks.

For correct BD and dvd playback on the majority of displays, Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr is the best option. The colors may look richer using RGB but it's oversaturating colors and losing black level in real terms.

I have heard that before. Does anyone know what setting it goes to when you have it on "Automatic"?
