Default RGB vs YPb/CbPr/Cr hdmi output setting on PS3?

I tried to do a search on this in the forums, if its a repeat I apologize. I am tweaking my PS3 setting to accomodate the best pq possible at 720p. Which is better??? RGB or YPb/CbPr/Cr for the HDMI output setting?? Thanks for the input.

YPb/CbPr/Cr if your tv supports it.

its a wider color range.

Default Not much discernable difference

Both are analog. There may be a difference where the sync signal is carried but the picture will be very similar. I assume that you don't have a digital output or your TV doesn't have a digital (HMDI, DVI) input. Don't underestimate the quality of component. You won't be diaappointed either way. Good luck.

I think mine are set to the YPb/ the RGB is really dark almost too dark, but with the right settings you can make it work.

My TV does have a HDMI input. And it does support both RGB and YPb/CbPr/Cr.

Component can do 1080p , your HDTV's input/outputs just have to accept it

I'm not sure I understand your original question. Does your PS3 have an HDMI output? If yes, use that. RGB and component should not be involved with this hookup or decision. If not, either of the other two will be an improvement and true HD even at 720. Your TV will scale a 1080 source to fit the screen. Since I don't have a PS3 I'm not sure how they present their options so I will let another PS3 owner address your issue better. Out of curiousity, why do you want to scale to 720?

Andy, yes the PS3 is connected via hdmi through my reciever. I want to scale at 720 because my tv is not 1080p.

I have a 720p set and i have my ps3 set to RGB full, it was darker than YPb/CbPr/Cr, but my black levels look alot better and i brought the brightness up and contrast down a bit and imo it looks better on my set then YPb/CbPr/Cr.

I use YPb/CbPr/Cr because I found while adjusting my tv I could not see super black when the PS3 was set to RGB full or limited.

Do you have 1080i? It looks better on some TV's than 720p. I don't think the PS3 does a great job of downscaling the 1080p to 720p so ... you may want to leave it at 1080i. Unless your TV cannot display that.

I compared alot of films and 1080i off the PS3 looks a lot better than 720p. Especially with dark scenes and such in movies. You lose alot of detail at 720p.

Anyway, I would leave the setting you asked about at Automatic. Let the PS3 choose for you. Thats what I have done and everything looks great.

When yours is on Auto, what setting does it choose? Mine chooses YPb/CbPr/Cr, so thats where I leave it.

Once it is on Auto, switcj between RGB and YPb/CbPr/Cr. If you switch to RGB from Auto and the screen goes black and looks like it is resetting, it was on YPb/CbPr/Cr.

if you leave it on "auto" then the setting is determined by the disc/video file, afaik. most bd movies come up in YPb/CbPr/Cr but some (e.g. Surf's Up) come up in RGB. must be something they can encode into the disc as a preferred format. the PS3 main menu comes up as RGB as do many of the HD movie trailers you can download from the Playstation Network.

i can easily tell which setting the PS3 picks in auto, because my TV (sceptre X37 naga 1080p LCD connected to PS3 by HDMI cable) must be switched to "DVI" input mode to correctly display RGB and "HDMI" input to correctly display YPb/CbPr/Cr. if i try to view something in the wrong input mode i get red fringing (on RGB content) or a purple tint (on YPb/CbPr/Cr content). i set mine to YPb/CbPr/Cr just to make it less complicated for the wife to watch movies when i'm not around.
