Default Are You Irritated By Barebones Releases?

Of course, the movie or show is what matters most, but I admit that I do get irritated when I see a relatively expensive release is barebones.

It bugs me because one of the original selling points of Blu was how much space they had compared to a DVD and how the extras were going to be overflowing with all great stuff. Sadly, we learned early on that this was not going to be the case when many titles came out on Blu and didn't even replicate what had been on the DVD. Why? Well, who knows, but I am not a huge fan of labels like Olive and their single layer, barebones releases. It won't sway me from buying a title I really want, but it has on some where I'm not so committed to having it in my collection.

Not really. I rarely watch extras anyway. I'm more concerned with the quality of the transfer.

It depends. If there are no existing extras and the transfer is good, then fine. A lot of Kino and Olive titles I'm just grateful to have available. I get really irritated when good DVD extras don't make it and the BD is barebones or as close to though.

I get more irritated when they don't include subtitles.
They should be mandatory on all Blu-rays.

Default At least

Every Blu-ray movie should at least have the trailer. I love watching something and then the great bits (that made me want to see it) before putting it back on the shelf.

Nope. Barebones is still better than none at all.

Not really if the transfer is good enough. Not that I don't love a loaded special edition in nice packaging but the transfer comes first.

I don't mind barebones. I mind $20+ barebones releases. I mean if there are no extras then $20 is way to much. $10 is better

Yes and no. I don't really have time to watch a lot of extras lately, but I do enjoy them and would like the option of having them to watch when I do have time. Not saying everything should be like LOTR or Blade Runner, with multiple cuts and multiple commentaries and four hour documentaries, but it wouldn't hurt the studios to add a few extras on every release. Especially when we know those extras already exist.

F'r instance, Lost River. The original cut that played Cannes last year was ten minutes longer. Extended cut? Deleted scenes? Nah, nothing. Some of the missing footage was even in the trailer -- "Look at my muscles!" -- but it ain't on the disc. I enjoyed the movie, I'm glad I bought it, but I really wish WB would have bothered to throw those 11 minutes onto the disc, maybe a commentary track or two. Lost River is exactly the kind of movie where I would make time to watch the extras... and there are none.

Nope. At this stage of the game, I'm happy if a movie that I like gets a decent Blu-ray release at all.

Barebones can be disappointing, but they rarely irritate me. I'd take a barebones single release over a 2 film single disc release with a handful of commentaries and other frivolous extra's I won't listen to. Honestly what I find most irritating is that genre classics like the Nightmare on Elm street sequels and Friday the 13th sequels are stuck sharing discs, while more niche stuff like what Grindhouse, and Scream Factory are releasing are getting much better collectors editions. It honestly is perplexing how genre staples like Freddy, Jason and Pinhead have been treated this generation considering how much more recognizable and "beloved" (for the lack of a better term) they are compared to the films that have had some Amazing collectors editions. (Everything Grindhouse has released, and a fair amount of Arrow/Scream Factory films).

I agree with this wholeheartedly. And, of course, agree with everyone else who has said that the transfer is the number one priority, but the idea of a barebones release makes me think of streaming and that's not a good thing.
