Receiver Question - Blu-ray Forum

I've had my PS3 and Sony KDL-40v2500 for a year now and now I'm looking to get the audio to go with it. I've been looking at receivers and reading message boards, but I'm not sure which to pick. I want to be able to experience HD audio, but I have no idea what all the terminology means (like HDMI passthrough???). If somebody could PLEASE help me with some of this, I would greatly appreciate it. I'm really not looking to spend more than $700 or so on the receiver (I've already picked out some kick a$$ speakers

)

If you bump your price range $100 you can get an awesome deal on Pioneer Elite http://cgi.videogon.com/cgi-bin/cl.p...1ch&1194743945 which blows away anything else in that price range.

Otherwise you're probably looking at Onkyo as your best bet.

Still doesnt explain pass through ... Ive just bought a Onkyo SR875 which has it and ive no idea what it is lol

The onkyo is like mission control and in the UK they dont even have Customer Support ... Mine was a nitemare to set up, the auto set up with the mic wasnt working properly as 5.1 so in the end I bought 2 more speakers and config'd it as 7.1 ...

Sound is fantastic ... although my player is a sammy 1200 and if you pause or when you play there is a few second delay with the hdmi audio being detected by the Onkyo...

HDMI Passthrough (terminology) can be confusing. It is used in a couple different ways.

In a negative aspect, when talking about Receivers:

"...don't buy such and such receiver,it is HDMI passthrough only"

By this meaning that the receiver will only pass video and cannot process HDMI audio. For audio you would need an optical cable.

(which defeats the purpose of a receiver having HDMI input in the first place. )

But sometimes Manufacturers will use passthrough loosely when describing its video capabilities...ex. 1080p video passthrough (even when the receiver can process HDMI audio), and it can confuse consumers.

Passthrough usually means that the receiver passes the video/audio through the receiver onto the tv. The receiver does nothing with the video/audio except pass it straight through the receiver. It does no processing of the video or audio. My Sony STR DG800 a/v receiver had hdmi passthrough so I could hook up more than one hdmi device to the tv with only 1 hdmi input on my tv. I still needed to run an optical cable from the PS3 and separate DVD player to the receiver to get any audio at all.

The opposite of passthrough (I am not sure of the antonym of passthrough) is that a receiver will process the audio and pass the video through. This allows you to take advantage of the PCM, DTS-MA, and True HD tracks on BD.

Most cheaper HDMI receivers will only have passthrough. If you have any desire to listen to better audio tracks, you will skip the passthrough receivers.

Go with the link for the Pioneer Elite 92, I have a 92 and a 94 both paired to Panny BD30's with Def Tech surround in each room and they are sick !!!! IMO, you can't go wrong with a Pioneer Elite receiver....especially the 92 or 94

Sorry I maybe should start a new thread but can anyone answer the following...

My Sammy has an option on Audio PCM or Bitstream ??? which do I choose with my Onkyo 875 using HDMI

Also is it better on a movie to choose uncompressed or Doblby 5.1 digital ? I had a movie tonight on uncompressed and it was cr@p I switched it over and my surround sounded great ...

DENON AVR888 7.1 Ch Audio/video Receiver with 1080p 1.3 hdmi. It's around $750 or so. It's one of the receivers I am looking at. My buddy works at an ABC Warehouse, so I should get a couple hundred off of it for myself. Same with the HARMAN/KARDON AVR347 7.1 A/V Home Theater Receiver with Dolby dig ex/dts-es that Pioneer Elite looks amazing. I am drooling. I don't think ABC Warehouse carries Pioneers.

I'm a huge Denon fan but there are a lot of great AVR's as reasonable prices out there.

I'm assuming that you're talking about the Sammy 1400 here. Everything will pretty much depend on the capabilities of the receiver that you're using. IIRC the 1400 has the ability to bitstream DTS HD and Dolby TrueHD to the receiver for decoding. That is what you want to do assuming that your receiver can handle the decoding. What receiver are you using?

edit. Oops, I missed the part about you having an 875. You'll want to bitstream the audio to the Onkyo. Try using a Fox title and see if you get an indication from the receiver that it's getting DTS HD MASTER. It should be.

the Sammy can will internally decode Dolby TrueHD. It does not decode DTS-HD Master, instead it bitstreams the audio out to the receiver.

So,

To hear Dolby TrueHD you have to set audio output as Linear PCM

To hear Dts-HD Master you have to set audio output as Bitstream.

(I know this might be a pain in the ass to do each time. Maybe try playing with the buttons on the remote? maybe there is a quick switch between PCM and Bitstream option, the PS3 has one, not sure about standalones)

When you select an 'Uncompressed PCM' track, the player automatically defaults to Linear PCM so you dont have to worry about switching for that one.
