Default Receiver Question

Hey folks. I'm new here and kinda' new to some of the technology involved. My question is what can I expect from an upgrade to a new receiver? I currently own a Yamaha HTR-5450 that I've had for several years but am considering purchase of a Yamaha RX-V663.

My HTR is connected to a PS3 by optical cable, and it does process Dolby Digital and DTS. As I'm sure you know, a new RX-V will connect via HDMI and allow the process of Dolby True HD and DTS HD Master Audio.

I am a married man who just spent a bunch of money (for me) on a KEF speaker system, Aquos LCD, and PS3. I'd like to round out the system with a new receiver, but need to sell my sweetheart on the purchase with the idea that she will be blown away by the sound improvement. Will that be the case? Or am I going to get a roll of the eyes? I'm not whipped, really!

Sorry for the long post. I appreciate any knowledge you might impart.

well, I for one think you will notice an improvement...especially with some KEF speakers.

Also you will have access to true 7.1 audio if you have a 7.1 speaker setup(?)

...perhaps hold off for a little while until price goes down, then your wife cannot complain.

Both good tips of advice I'll probably do. Just wanted to know the level of improvement in sound quality. I have no doubt there is some, but are we talking the kind of steps say between mono to stereo to 5.1 surround? Don't get me wrong - I want the receiver and what it offers - just gotta' share the house with others.
