Default Just jumped into LCD world. Quick ?

Ok, so I finally decided to upgrade my old 26" CRT for my room. Unfortunately I had to go cheap...so I bought a Dynex® - 32" Flat-Panel LCD HDTV. (im actually very satisfied by its performance and the design look is beautiful )

a couple quick questions?

Does anyone know about the "Backlight" feature? Im guessing its an artificial addition to the "Brightness" setting?? The User Manual does not explain it, just says "adjust's the backlight level (1-10)". So am I correct in thinking this affects the overall brightness? and would you receommend lowest setting or highest setting? I used DVE and I thought lower level looked better. Any recomendations as far as this option?

Does anyone know how to get into the service menu? and if so, know of any settings you would tinker with (white levels,color...etc) or do they come set pretty precise?

I know burn in wont affect it, but does an LCD need to be "broken" in like plasmas? Im guessing no.

My last question is in reguards to DishNetwork remote control. Ive had Dish for about a year and a half now...so I know my user manual was made waaay before my LCD came out...so it does not contain any program codes for the DISH Remote and Dynex. Does anyone have a Dynex and Dishnetwork? are there any codes? I would just like to be able to turn on/off the TV and adjust volume with only one remote...my dish remote, is it possible? (I tried using the random remote code search like the DISH user manual says, and it turns the TV off like the manual says it would, but does not turn back on...so the code must not be right)

any other Universal remote that can control DISH and Dynex?

Usually I scavenge the internet to find my own answers...but I cannot find squat on Dynex.

well thanks for any advice and help!

i put my backlight on my samsung lcd to 5 or 6, i used to have it at 10 but i thought that was to bright. it really depends on what you think looks good, i was thinking the brighter the better, but what i have it on now fits my movies perfect.

yeah, I'll guess it should be adjusted for different inputs. I have it on zero for satellite programs and it is very dark.

can too much backlight be bad for the LCD (besides PQ wise)...like shorter span life of the LCD?

Try a different model from the same company. They might use the same code.

Backlight is exactly that. Its a light behind the screen that makes the overall picture brighter or dimmer. Most TVs have a feature that uses a sensor that automatically adjusts the backlight depending on the lighting in the room. The darker the room the dimmer it gets and the more light that is in the room the brighter the backlight gets. I don't use that feature on my TV.

I wouldn't get into the service menu. I've heard stories of people messing up their sets doing that. Just stick to the settings that are available in the TV's menu screen.

I don't believe LCD's need to be broken in.

no worries, im fairly knowledgable in service menu arena...believe me, screwing my set beyond repair is last intention. But I would like to know how to access it.

I'm not sure either. I know I've seen how to get into my sets service menu in the AVS forum. I'm not sure about yours though, you might want to do a search for your brand and model at the AVS forum.

Do a search on AVS trying to find your particular TV in an "official" users guide. Both times I got a new TV I just went there and people usually post settings. Try a few of them & see which you like best. I've referred friends who have purchase new TV's also & it seems like it works out great. Let them people spend hours trying out the settings instead of messing with it.

Nice sig BTW

I have backlight and picture set to MAX. But then I turned on the light sensor and it adjusts based on how dark the room is when Im using the Bravia.

They recommend setting the backlight at the lowest setting you can stand, to allow for the best blacks possible only. I have mine on 4. There is no break in time on LCDs.

Yeah and if you have light sensor or power save, turn them off.

Run a calibration disc and you have no choice but to set it to look perfect. Blacks/whites and color will all look right after calibrating ! I used the THX Optimiser from the Disney Platinum Edition DVD's.

...yeah, unfortunately I could only use the DVE calibration for HDMI input settings and then copy the settings to other inputs and make slight adjustments...my DISH TV is coming in through S-Video (yeah I know!)...so the same settings are not ideal with the different inputs, and no way to get proper black levels for my S-Video input so its a best guess.

i think it can shorten the life span of the tv, thats why i put all my settings low( and I like the way the picture looks) my seetings are like this:
contrast-74
color-57
brightness-54
tint-50
backlight-6

I just bought this tv from BB about a week ago.

I can't seem to get the PQ settings right for my cable box, 360 or PS3. Anyone here using this tv mind posting their settings to help me? Thanks

Ok, I used a calibration DVD with the HDMI connection only...this will give you good color for a dvd source, but may or may not ideal for the PS3/Xbox...but you can always tweak it.

first be sure to set to 'Warm' (I believe its in the "Feature" or "advanced picture" setting, cant remember which)

Contrast - 65
Brightness - 48
Sharpness - 4
Color - 63
Tint - G3
Backlight - 1

You may or may not like these settings...you can always play with them.

Also, if anyone cares...I found the Remote code to make the TV work with a DISH remote...#720.
