Saddest Sight In The World: HD DVD Sponsored Bags At CES
Oh, poor HD DVD. Toshiba pays big bucks to stamp its name and the HD DVD logo on every journo bag they hand out at CES. But Warner's *****slap has sent them home to cut their wrists and cry in the corner, so they're not even here! Yep, the HD DVD Group has shitcanned their conference. Just how did we get to this sad state of affairs? Let's review. Well, Warner scopes the holiday sales scene, sees Blu-ray picking up even though its gear cost more than HD DVD, and decides to go full steam ahead on Blu-ray, lest the format war suffocate both of the HD formats and DVD. With only two studios left on HD DVD's team (Paramount and Universal), things look pretty crappy on their front, so I sorta don't blame them for bailing to ponder its doom. Hit the comments with what you think they'll say in their post-CES conference. http://gizmodo.com/341125/saddest-si...ed-bags-at-ces |

I don't claim to know what was really up with Fox... they may have been seriously considering the offer, though given their stance on BD+ and region-coding, I kinda doubt it. More likely, it seems to have been a trick play to make Toshiba and the HD DVD PRG think they were about to win. Whatever the case, it had a beneficial effect for Blu-ray. Toshiba thought they were going to shock the world, and become the comeback story of the decade, and so they didn't run any more crazy $99/$169 player sales in December. As a result, Blu-ray actually sold more players. The HD DVD PRG then setup a huge CES conference to announce their shocking victory... and then... Fox walked. Warner walked. Blu-ray won. Toshiba was left without a plan B. Cue the fat woman. |

I was hoping to hear what the HD DVD group had to say about the recent change of events. ![]() |

That might be the only thing in the future to remind people there used to be a format called HD-DVD
