Default Question: Is it true that HD-DVD is not 1080p?

I'm a huge blu fan (thanks to my ps3 and blockbuster.com combiniation).

I was reading somewhere on these forums suggesting that HD-DVD is not true 1080p. What does that mean?

Hoping up to firm up more ammunition when convincing people to go blu with their new flatscreens.

Thanks.

HD-DVD does do 1080p but many of the very cheap players do not. The ones involved in the $98 Walmart Black Friday sale were not 1080p units. However the format itself does so 1080p.

A lot of the HD players are only 1080i and not 1080P, only a few are 1080P

at this point, I don't think anybody needs any Ammunition to convince anybody to choose BLU ? If they do, just tell them to take their hard earned money and flush it down the toilet

What they're referring to is the fact that it is not standard for all HD DVD players to output video at 1080p, the currently highest video quality available to the public at large. The entry level HD DVD players (A2 & A3) only output at 1080i, which while still great, it does have its limitations once you get above 50" in screen size (and some will argue smaller than that).

All blu-ray players output at 1080p.

In plain English 76% of all hd dvd players sold do not support 1080p. Those are Novembers numbers so I am sure they're off but not by much.

Remember my saying: People who love technology buy Blu-Ray, people who are cheap buy hd dvd.

That's is the reason most hd dvd are 1080i

Got it - thanks for the replies.

I think Amazon should clarify that in their red-biased breakdown of HD-DVD vs. blu-ray.

Also, no mention whatsoever of the dominant studio-backing for blu.

Bottom-line is, the typical consumer will look at Amazon's breakdown and conclude that red is viable, and decide on price.

But to someone else's point, sort of doesn't matter now - the war is won!

Gary (one of our mods) had some great insight on this. Even the ones that are 1080P, except for the best one, does some kind of deinterlacing. Maybe he can add to this...

The films are all 1080p, but not all players can output it.However if your tv is not 1080p then this is not an issue.

So does the xbox hd player do 1080P? I play games in 1080P but it just don't seem right having 1080p with componets ( I don't have the elite) And would it matter if the the player is connected to the xbox with a usb? It uses a usb to connect to the xbox to run the player and the xbox connects with a componet cable or hdmi. Would that affect quality?

HD-DVD can do 1080p... it is only the cheap players that can't...

People have to first ask what it means to "do 1080p". If a player outputs absolutely accurate 1080i/60, 1080p/24, and 1080p/60, does it matter what it does with the data internally?

AFAIK all the HD DVD players decode to 60i internally and then de-interlace to generate the 1080p output. To not do so is actually out of spec. Since they should know the nature of the source material, they should be able to recover 1080p perfectly. But, apparently the A20 botched it.

The Samsung P1000 did 60i to 60p de-interlacing. I don't know about current Blu-ray players. kjack would be the resident expert on SMP8630 Series based BD players.

There is nothing inherently wrong with the idea of post-de-interlacing to 24/60p, if it is done right.

I have to say that I'm very disappointed at the BD-P1000. I own a Toshiba EP35 that is half the price from Amazon, has better upscaling and has the /24 option + an ethernet connection. This is a poor show indeed. If it weren't for there being more titles for blu-ray, the format would be dead by now. The EP35 IS SUPERIOR AT HALF THE PRICE! And as an owner of a 50" 1080p TV I can tell everyone for a fact that the picture quality is the same on both, so is the sound quality, so someone please explain to me (no fanboys please) why blu-ray is a superior format and the players are superior when I can get a HDDVD player that is better for half the price?

Why is it bad for HDDVD players to be 1080i if only 0.005% of the population actually have 1080p TV's? And 1080p on a 32" isn't going to make much difference, you really need the 46" and above to see the difference properly. 720P is just fine for 32" and less. It almost seems like Sony have deliberately wanted to alienate a large portion of the population by overpricing the players and making people think they MUST have something special because they spent so much money. Same principle as 'Monster Cables'.If blu-ray is better because there are more good movies for it, then the XBOX 260 must be better than PS3 because there are more good games?

1-0 to HDDVD. Sorry guys/gals, the blu-ray player manufacturers need to get their act together and prove the technology is better by actually making something better than than the HDDVD players at the same price.

P.S No flaming please, I'm not a HDDVD fanboy. I own both players so only have bias towards the better technology = value for money.

From what I understand the HD-DVD add on for the XBox 360 has a limit of 720p for output.

Uhhh... if you haven't read the news lately consumers voted with their wallets and Blu-ray has basically won.
HD-DVD will be gone in 60 days.

I would move on. The war is essentially over.
