Default Can't convince my friend that Blu is the way to go!!

I have a friend who recently purchased an Xbox 360 just because he thinks everyone has one and they are better than PS3. He is trying to tell me that it is better blah blah blah. He also just bought a brand new HDTV and I ask him well are you gonna use it to watch HD movies? He says "I'm just going to buy an upconversion dvd player. Blu-rays are too expensive and I have too many SD-DVDs". I told him why don't you just buy a BD player or sell your Xbox (that he doesnt use) and just buy a 40GB PS3. It has an upconverter and blu-ray all for about the same price or more as the Xbox and a new dvd player. Plus, it has more potential to grow and become and even better system than it already is.

It just felt like I was talking to a brick wall. I was getting pretty aggervated. Well sorry I just had to vent.

It's an education process, have you had him over to play with your PS3? For some people that's all it takes. The difference in quality between the 2 systems is IMMEDIATELY apparent, and it doesn't take the XBOX's red ring of death to make that clear.

That being said, there are a lot more games out for Xbox than for PS3, and a lot more of them are mainstream titles. Once the PS3 gets more AAA titles he may come around.

The way I see it, BD players will drop to around $100 by the end of the year and by then he will not be able to argue that he can't afford it. If he has an HDTV and a 360, he can get a BD player.
Tell him the prices have been dropping fast and will keep dropping, and that they will upconvert his DVDs as well. He can keep his DVD library and watch Blu-rays.

Yeah I mentioned that to him and he said "when that happens I'll think about it". He kind of sounded like he regreted buying his 360 also which was a sign.

i had the same problem... my friend's wife asked me what she should get him for christmas and i was like ps3 and then she asked him and he was like, i want an 360 because 'said friends' had cod4 and he wanted to play on xbl with them. needless to say, she got him the xbox.

a few days later he asks me if uncharted is on xbox. told him no. then he asked me if he could play hd movies on his xbox. told him only if he bought the add on or if he downloaded them from xbl, and only then they're only HD DVD or 720p. then he asked if he could get pirates 3 on it. told him, nope, disney is problu. then he asked how much psn was per year... i told him free. he got pissed.

next day his xbox controllers stopped working. then the hd/sd wires from the xbox clunked out. he had to go out and buy an hdmi cable. he finally had to return the whole thing and get a new console. i told him to wait a few months, he'll understand why i'm not so fond of the system.

Agree, but I have always made the point that ONLY new games matter really. People really don't buy catalog games, at least not in great volumes. We've all seen several lists of upcoming games or The Best 50 Games for 2008.. well, these lists all pretty much show that the PS3 is on par or even slightly ahead looking forward.

I think by mid-year that will be all that people are considering. The big wall of games at GameStop really doesn't matter that much. Hot new titles and exclusives matters. Many of the 360's best socalled "exclusives" are FPS that are on PC as well and that does eat into their sales.

Think of it this way... a catalog movie is way more interesting than a catalog game if only because the old movie is still close in quality to a new movie while a game certainly isn't - yet, catalog movies really don't sell either. New stuff sells and old stuff doesn't. Size of the total library is irrelevant in every sense. Only the size of the future pipeline matters.

If he's your friend, then invite him over to watch POTC3, Spiderman 3, and some other great Blu exclusive titles, then pop in a SD DVD(actually maybe do this first, then show the high-def stuff).

I just love these people that can afford a shiny new HDTV, but a BD player to watch prime HD content on it is too expensive.

At least you tried. There are some good games out there on the 360 so he will have entertainment for sure. That is what gaming is all about, entertainment. If he is not big into movies and just a gamer, well, he should be ok. Besides, it's his money.

Exactly. His loss. I wouldn't try to convince him on anything at this point. As long as you enjoy your Blu-ray, that is all that matters. Your friend can stay stuck in the 20th Century to his heart's content.

I've never quite gotten that aspect either. If you buy the $2-3k TV, and I boldly assume that your intent in doing so was to see something presented in HD, then how is a few hundred bucks to ACTUALLY SEE something in HD expensive?

Give it up unfortunately he drank Microcraps Kool-Aid. Sometimes the effects last a lifetime even though the world is going to pass him by.

Seriously, Blu-ray is too expensive for some because HD isn't high on their priority list or they really don't appreciate the difference. We can afford what we prioritize. I think only the simple believe that if HD DVD would have won this war that quality players and content would have gotten cheap.

In short, we should take it easy judging those that choose not to buy in to something they won't want or use. I just let them come over to my house so I can enjoy watching their jaws drop.

Look, there IS a lot of competition among BD player manufacturers (unlike HD DVD manufacturer) and that will drive down prices. Plus to get the general public to go Blu, they will need to fight against DVD and not HD DVD. DVD upconverters are cheap, between $50-$100. So if a BD player can get around $100, it will be in direct competition with DVD. In fact, as we saw with the HD DVD A2 firesale, it has already shown that it will sell very well at that price, even if it is just a sale.

Don't think you won't see a $100 BD player in time for the holidays.

Yeah, but the firesale might have done more harm than good as many on this forum have argued an infinite number of times. You don't want to give the appearance of firesale. The key point will be to have cheap players at $199 for the holidays. people will pay that for next-gen technology. they know it's better than up-converters. $100 is just too great a stretch and the blu-ray side just hasn't shown a tendency to price so desperately.

Perhaps, but if it isn't a priority then why buy the $2-3k TV? That's the logical breakdown in all of this.

Maybe a trip to Kinkos is in order. You could create a large side by side spec chart showing him the proof in very large text. Visual aides is what it's going to take. If this still doesn't work, start smacking him over the head with said large visual aide and hope that the info is forced in physically since mental stimulation is obviously impaired.
