Lightbulb Upscaling Options (PS3 60GB)

I've never been certain about the DVD Upscaler in the PS3. As far as the options, I believe you can choose "Off", "Double Scale", and "Full".

What is the difference between Double Scale and Full? Or in other words, what does Full mean (Full screen perhaps)?

I notice, since I got my newer HDTV a couple of weeks ago, when I pick Double scale, it makes the DVD play in a much smaller area, like in a boxed area, and when I pick full, it is full screen. So, it's not exactly fun watching a movie in a smaller box just because it is set to double scale.

It may be just the movie I was watching (It was from 1997), I will have to test my theory a few more times. I just got "White Noise 2" in the mail, so I will check it out tonight.

Thanks for the help everyone. If you'd like to add me on PS3, send me a request. My PSN name is right under my avatar.

*Specs: 60GB PS3, 1080p LCD TV. PS3 Display settings on 1080P w/HDMI*

Since my TV is 1080i/720p I set my resolution to 720p then I do the double thing and it looks great. It took me a while, I just messed with the settings and that's what I came up wit. I'd like 2 know if I'm doing this corectlt, so if any1 knows, please let us know.

Yeah, it seems like it would be REALLY nice to have a cheat sheet.

PS3 via HDMI to TV = these settings
PS3 via HDMI to Receiver = these settings

etc...

Just something that tells you what will give the best picture and sound in the common configurations.

I was hoping someone here watched a lot of DVD's, I know it's crazy to ask for on a Blu-ray forum , but hey, there is a ton of stuff that is not on Blu-ray yet.

I blame it on Sony. How hard would it have been to explain Upscaling in a FAQ? I just want to know what settings I should have to enjoy the best upscaled picture, preferably without a smaller viewing area.

I thought I was the only one confused about Upscaling on the PS3, I'm glad to hear that other's are also wondering...

Someone here has to know...

SONY is not to blame. They are actually to be commended. They give you options to make it work the way you need/like it to work for you, they don't tell you this is how it works, live with it.

See here for an explanation of what the settings do: http://manuals.playstation.net/docum...ings.html#2449

DVD Upscaler
Adjust settings for upscaled output when playing a DVD. Upscaling is a feature that can be used to enable content recorded at SD resolution (NTSC: 480p / 480i, PAL: 576p / 576i) to be displayed in HD resolution (1080p / 1080i / 720p). Because the video content of commercial DVDs is recorded in SD resolution, higher resolution video can be achieved by enabling upscaled output.

Off Set to disable upscaled output.

Double Scale* Set to upscale and display with double horizontal and vertical dimensions without changing the proportions.

Normal Set to upscale and display at a size that matches the screen size.

Full Screen Set to upscale and display at full screen by changing proportions and stretching the image

* This option can be used only when the video output setting of the PS3™ system is set to 1080p or 1080i.

Full manual explaining the various settings is here: http://manuals.playstation.net/docum...ent/index.html

Pretty sure I use the Double Scale. Picture looks great for an SD DVD.

Thank you. Finally, a helpful citizen

Here's the quote that gets me, on that page you linked to:
Quote:
If image quality is reduced or the image does not look right when upscaled, set this option to [Off].
Well, that's me then. When I clicked "Double Scale", the image reduced in size on my screen (When I watched the White Noise 2 DVD tonight). When I picked Full, or Normal, it was full screen, but pretty grainy.

One more quote from that link:
Quote:
Double Scale* Set to upscale and display with double horizontal and vertical dimensions without changing the proportions.
My proportions clearly changed, so, I guess I'm out of luck on using Double Scale, unless I want to watch a smaller version of the movie (When I picked Double Scale, the picture quality was not at all better).

The problem wasn't noticeable on my previous 30" HDTV (It was technically broken), but with a new HDTV, it's clear that Blu-ray is tons better looking on the screen than a DVD. Conspiracy? Yep .

One more question, do you think changing the PS3 settings to 720p before watching a DVD, then changing it to "Double Scale", the size of the onscreen image would fit on screen, or would it still reduce the size?
