actually it does help. i watched v for vendetta with upscaler on. thought...hmm...this is upscaled? then turned it off. and wow what a difference. all the grain was gone. and the colors were definitely more vibrant. you can't expect blu-ray hd quality though.

So you're saying the picture looked better WITHOUT the upscale feature? Wow that's a disappointment. |

Sorry no, in my head I guess this sounded right, but on print it comes out retarded. No what I meant to say is that when I turned off the upscaler I noticed that it really does make a difference. The upscaler works beautifully in fact. The images are much smoother and far less grainy than without the upscale feature.
upscaler gets a thumbs up from me! |

I tried Miami Vice (SD), this is the jamie foxx release, last night after updating with 1.8 an noticed no difference than before. Perhaps I have seen too much HD or the movie is set to be more grainy to give the old Miami vice feel?
Not sure I will ever be happy with upscaled DVD's. I will try the Incredibles later to see if the quality is better. |

Don't feel bad. I also did not know what each setting meant. I did notice a diffence in both dvd movies and ps2 games. I put in POTC 2 last night after the update and I was watching the part when Jack Sparrow was tied up and was about to get cooked by the cannibals. The rope he was tied with had much more detail (or was clearer, at least). I paused the screen and switched the upscaler on and off using the menu you mentioned. There is a diffence but it is slight. I also put in Socom: combined assault and the images were much more smoother.
I was kind of disappointed. Since I had no prior experience with upscaling, I was expecting much more than a slight difference. |

I just wanted to get the absolute best quality I could out of my standard dvd's until I replace them with Blu Ray. |

The best 480i x 720 upscaling to 1080p theoretically can have 1080p sharpness (edge contrast) and 440i resolution (details) so it will look somewhere in between 440i and 1080p.
After all 720p x 1280 non-upscaled can only have 720p sharpness and 720p resolution. That's why upscaling can somtimes seenm to extract more thann there is. A difficult concept to grasp at first view. ([sharpness x resolution]/noise = image clarity) (If you, reading this, realize that 1080p upscaled to 2160p can have 2160p sharpness and 1080p resolution so it's > 1080p, you got yourself a cookie) |
