Yes, the upscale on the PS3 is VERY GOOD !!!!!!!! Makes my regular DVD's look almost (but definitley not) as good as Blu Ray's on my 1080p DLP.

No it's not. It plays at whatever resolution you set in the PS3's settings (provided you have update 1.80 or later). I run my standard dvd's at 720p, and they look very good. Still can't compare to a blu-ray disc, but they look good for sure.

PS3 Forever. I was just looking at all of it's stats and reading about the DTR call PlayTV coming out overseas. They need to make it for the US soon! Man what a piece of hardware...

It does look good but its still not great compared to blu-ray. I got rid most of my DVDs anyway.

The only thing that could make it better would be a 5 disc carousel. I could wake up, put in Resistance, Madden, and 3 movies and wouldn't have to leave me recliner all day.

That 480p comment is entirely wrong. Progressive scan players play at 480p. The PS3 upconverts to 1080p. Not a true lossless 1080p mind you b/c the upconvert requires the cpu to add information. That being said, the upconverted movies on my PS3 look amazing.
I LOVE my PS3. Absolutely the best hi-def entertainment value anywhere.

I would say Transformers upconverted on my PS3 will look great since even old movies I have look nice. How many of you will buy Transformers on DVD and hope for a Blu version down the road?

One of my newer DVD's, Kink Kong, looks outstanding upconverted through my PS3.

If you think upscaled DVD look almost as good as blu-ray, there must be something wrong with your full-HD display. An upscaled DVD does not contain more picinfo than a non-scaled DVD. It just outputs the picture in 1080p. I suggest you take a look at the settings of your DLP because you should see a MAJOOOOR difference.

Good idea. A sleep timer that turns off the PS3 after x minutes of no activity would be great.

i have a feeling u dont understand me. when i said that sdvd is always 480p - it is. u can not make something that do not exist. if u want to dig a little more, ull find what i am talking about. of course it looks great, but it is still sdvd, as i said, not even close to BD 1080p. i am a big bd fann, ps3 is my only hd machine, i adore it, my tv is 1080p, and i have 500 dvds - so i am quite cpapble of saying what i said. upconverting is nice, superbit was nice - but men, thats history, ok??
stating that "upc. is amazing, very close to 1080p etc etc" is simply silly and not true!

My LCOS set automatically upconverts any non 1080P signal it gets so I can't tell the difference between the PS3 upconversion and SD and have tried both. This should be true of any LCD based 1080P set. Blu-ray however is vastly better than upconverted DVD. Too much interpolation needed to go from 345,600 pixels to 2,073,600 pixels.

from what I understand, upscaling/up-converting/up-sizing (or whatever you want to call it) doesn't just output the signal in 1080. Perhaps it does but with my experience in digital photography there is nothing saying that up-scaled images in a film shouldn't be re-sampled at a larger size...
in other words, the technology should be able to take the 480 image, and run a fast calculation to let the edges and pixel smooth out to give a higher quality image than a straight 1080 output.
What I mean is that it will try to make the image look better than just "doubling up" pixels by running a fast process to figure out what pixels go in between.
Like I said, i am not sure if up-scaling technology utilizes this, but I know that in theory it should work.
