Default Onkyo 605 vs 705

I tried to search the forum to see if I could find an answer to my question and didn't find anything really pertinent, so here goes and sorry if this was already answered before.

What I'm wondering is, is there any major difference between the Onkyo 605 and Onkyo 705 other then the 3rd HDMI and THX certification for the 705? I don't see myself needing the 3rd connection as all I would have hooked up is my PS3 and cable box anyway.

There is a mild up-conversion factor. The 705 will upgrade 480i signals to 720p from analog, passed through to HDMI. Also 90W per channel vs. 100W per channel.

For me, it was worth the upgrade just for the extra HDMI port. I had the 605 to start, but bought the 705 a few months later.

Both are very good machines.

Hope this helps.

Look for deals on the 805. far better upgrade and every now and then you can find one for $649 - $699.

I want the 805. Sadly, I don't have the funds right now. Hopefully by 2009 they'll be a bit cheaper.

you should get the 705 on the blue light alone

The 605 also upscales 480i to 720p through HDMI. But, according to CNET (I'm going to try this at home), the resulting video was not desirable. Someone just tried it today with a Wii and said that it puts black bars on the sides, so I'm probably not going to use that setting.

That said, I didn't need the third HDMI port and the price differential wasn't worth it to me. $389.99 total for the 605 vs $649.99 plus tax and shipping for the 705.

I am also looking into each of these receivers. I know I will have a HD cable box and the PS3 to hook up through HDMI, but what else could I possibly hook up in the future?

Maybe an HD camcorder, a dvd carousel or (gasp!) an hd dvd player?

I am looking to upgrade the 605 to the 705 myself. So I am glad this thread popped up. Right now I only have a PS3 and DirecTV receiver. But I do plan on buying a stand alone BD player (most likly a BD50) later on, especially if the PS3 doesn't get an upgrade to decode DTS MA. So, I will be needing the extra HDMI input eventually.
Now I just need to find someone to buy my 605 since I have no need for 2 receivers. My dad may be interested in it though as he is looking for an Onkyo.

give it to mom for mothers day coming up...it will secretly be for dad, but will be nice gesture for mom also! (then when fathers day comes around, remind your dad about the Onkyo you secretly gave him...two birds one stone )

I too have been looking to get a 605 or 705. Does the 705 support any different audio decodes than the 605? The specs for the 605 on Amazon do not list Dolby TrueHD or DTS MA... but I though I remembered a CNET editor's review saying it did...

Edit: If the 605 happened to support both the new Hi-Def audio's... I would just assume save my money and get it.

they decode the exact same codecs...the 705 is THX with 3 HDMI inputs instead of 2.

not much else different even relevant. The 605 is a good receiver for the price.

i just ordered the 705. i was leaning towards the 605 but after some thought and the opportunity to sell back some of my vacation time at work, i decided to bite the bullet and get the 705. I've never had a receiver below 100watts so I didn't want to start now and the thx certification is nice.

The 705 will also take a 5.1 PCM and extend it to 7.1 whereas the 605 does not.

Crack, I see your a Mod now. You easily deserve it and should be anyone's first choice for info/assistance, not that you need anything added to your load

thanks.

and thanks for pointing out the 5.1PCM matrix to 7.1PCM. I was unsure if the 705 did that like the 805 does.

I thought the 605 only did HDMI passthrough of video and not audio, which would require an optical cable.
