Default question about Onkyo 804

I've seen a lot of pics of people with other receivers, and when playing a movie it display on the front of their receiver will read something like DTS-MA or True-HD.

I have an Onkyo 804 with a 5.1 setup. Whenever I play a Blu-ray movie via the PS3, I have 2 audio options available that display on the front LED: Direct or Multich(annel).

Is this the way it's supposed to be? Am I missing something? I just want to make sure I'm getting the most out of the receiver.

unfortunately your receiver is a couple of years old now...and does not have Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD MASTER decoding abilities.

Thankfully though, it is Multichannel PCM compatible (pg.32 in User Manual shows its 5.1PCM)

Since the PS3 can decode Dolby TrueHD, it is converted back into its original PCM form...and sent as Linear PCM. Which is why you see, and should see "Multichannel" or "Direct" displayed on the front.

Thanks, Crack! I appreciate the reply.

I've listed my 804 on Craigslist... trying to sell and upgrade to the 805. I was dismayed when I found out that the 804 doesn't support 1080p with a PS3. Onkyo offered to fix this for free, but I'd have to ship it to their service center in NY for an undisclosed period of time, and at my expense.

I figured its best to just upgrade... I've found the 805 for around $750-800 new, unless you recommend anything else in that price range?

Hmm... June is so far away... I might get the 805 now and then the Pioneer in June. I had seen someone discussing that elsewhere, but wasn't sure about their quality. But I respect your recommendation, thanks!

Your PS3 won't bitstream the raw TrueHD or DTS HD MA. Why upgrade? The 804 is pretty solid; you don't need the upscaling, and the new Pioneers and Onkyos won't get you any new capability. I'd hold out for DTS HD MA decoding in the PS3 and see how that sounds. At that point decide if you want to replace your processor and BD transport.

Oh, my fazhah has the 804 and I've noticed it doesn't do 24Hz. The new receivers will get you that if your display needs it.

Actually no, but thanks for the sound advice (no pun intended).

Although I am trying to sell my KDS-50A2020 and get the 3000 specifically for 1080/24p and HDMI 1.3, at which point I'd need to swap out that receiver.

I took the 804 off Craigslist and will hang on to it for a little while longer. I was just pissed that it won't accept 1080p from the PS3 due to that glitch, and am currently swapping communications with Onkyo about an alternative to me sending it off for repairs. It's possible they may send me an already-modified 804 in advanced exchange, so my ENTIRE a/v setup doesn't have to be down while my 804 is gone for repair.
