Default PS3 Audio

Sorry to make anyone repeat themselves but can anyone neatly and clearly explain what the PS3s audio output capabilites are as far as HD audio.

I watched RE:Extinction which has the HD audio only track. My system played it, but it seemed really front heavy and I had to turn my receiver up much louder than normal. You can see what I'm working with in my signature.

Any and all help is appreciated.

what do u mean by front heavy? i experienced no sound issues with Extinction using the TrueHD track. i also use a ps3.

i experience the opposite on Apocalypse with the PCM 5.1 soundtrack...dialogue volume seemed low, but sound effects and such were WAAAY loud. i had to actually turn it down from my normal movie listening volume because the action sequences were deafening. anyone else experience this?

Have you calibrated your speakers using an SPL meter?

I have not calibrated the speakers.

What I mean by front heavy is it seemed most of the sound was coming from my front three speakers but I was not getting my usual "surround" effect from the movie. My receiver is kind of dated which may cause some of the problem.

I know the system is pretty well balanced b/c other movies, like saving private ryan, sound amazing and COD4 has great surround effects.

Any other takers? I saw another thread that mentioned that the PS3 could not output all HD audio tracks b/c it is missing a hardware output???

Does your receiver have an HDMI input to handle multichannel sound? If not, and you're using a digital optical cable, you were probably hearing 2 channel linear PCM decoded by your receiver with Dolby Surround IIX. IIX is not a discrete channel codec, so your surround sound probably was much quieter and more diffused than your accustomed to hearing with Dolby Digital or DTS 5.1.

In your PS3's audio settings, make sure the BD/DVD setting is bitstream. That way you'll at least be able to take advantage of the discrete 5.1 channel lossy soundtracks. Again, this advice assumes your receiver cannot accept 7.1 channel linear PCM via HDMI.

kingofgrills hit it right on...... Here all this time i though I was listening to PCM surround on the PS3 but i was using optical and optical isn't capable of this. The other day i was watching Ratatouille Blu and I went into Ratatouille settings, and ran the speaker test, only to find the rear speakers were not putting out anything.

After research, you must have a receiver that is HDMI 1.3a. Once i googled it, I realized i had to set audio settings from PCM to Bitstream. Once it was set to bitstream, i ran the speaker test again and all is good. Maybe someday I'll be able to afford a receiver that works as a HDMI 1.3a repeater.

I had to sell my old receiver since it could only do 5.1 surround sound via the digital optical cable. This effectively prevented me from getting any of the HD audio codecs. So I sold it and replaced it with the Sony you see in my sig. Sounds great!

PS3 audio via:

HDMI

PCM output only (no bitstream)
Decodes TrueHD and converts it to PCM.
Does not decode DTS-HD MA and will only play DTS core.

Optical

If output of PS3 is set to PCM it will only pass 2ch PCM only.
If set to bitstream, it will pass Dolby and DTS 5.1 via bitstream for decoding in receiver.
