As of now, the largest game, in terms of the size it occupies, is The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion occupying almost 5GB in DVD. Why would one use BRD for games this next generation? What insane game would occupy almost all the 50GB that the BRD can take? It just doesn't make sense at all.

i can see you're a bit of a troll already.
but humor us and tell us what research you have done and i'll apologize. in case you didn't know, resistance is taking up 22 GB already. a little larger than your 5 GB number. |

Don't just think about the here and now. You've got to think about future implications.
The additional storage space provides options. This has been covered before in the press. Now, Game Designers (if they so desire) will be able to release one disc that covers all regions, i.e. contains all of the localization necessary for each country. This reduces marketing costs, packaging costs, etc. It's actually a pretty smart move. |

Maybe they can use VC-1 to compress the games...
Does VC-1 work on games? ![]() As noted, the future is a big place. If this console is to last 6 years like the PS2 it is gonna have to be ready for the future. XBox doesn't need to be so concerned since they turn over the hardware on a much shorter time frame. So the 360 will be obsoleted by the it needs a Bluray drive to compete. |

I case you didn't know, Resistance is taking up 16GB and not 22GB since it was cut down, not because of codings or animations but because of cut-scenes - and those are the ones that really fill-up space. But even with 22GB space, using BRD would still be a waste.
But then again, hyperdine is right. When it comes to future games or applications, this large size will be useful. Last edited by Prophet Izaach; 11-13-2006 at 06:22 AM. |

I am downloading games (imaged) from torrent sites every day, and i can tell you that many of them are more than 8GB large and this is because they are limited to DVD9! Blu-Ray is the only possible way to improve gaming in the future! If you dont like it stick with DVD, or even go back to CD or Floppy!!! ![]() |

Resistance is also a global game disc, meaning all languages are on a single disc, no need for region specific versions of the game. And as for FMV? Well it'll be HD won't it, something you won't be seeing too much of on other systems. FMV is fine and dandy as long as it pushes the story forward.
Trolls beware, we've seen all the anti blu-ray and anti PS3 arguments anyone can fire and there are answers for all of them. All you're actually doing is highlighting the flaws with rival consoles. There is only one fully HD enabled console available and it's made by Sony. No more speculation either, PS3 is out NOW. In 4 days time the 'States gets 400,000 of these beauties and at least a million of them will be in homes throughout America and Japan by the end of this year. Then Europe gets on board, maintaining the high profile of the PS3 into the New Year. Let's face it, buy March this year people were bored of waiting for Xbox360 as MS still weren't up to full production. PlayStation3 is here! I've still got four months to wait, but I'm damned excited, and can't wait for some of the guys here to get theirs and report back. |

Of course the need of Blu-ray games isn't that apparent right now, but Sony designed the PS3 to be as future-proof of a console they could make it, and that extra space will be felt some time down the line. Games like Oblivion were only 5gbs, but that doesn't mean that devs wouldn't attempt to use more space if it was given to them. As some have already pointed out, games on Blu-ray can hold multiple languages on one disc. That's great for Japanese rpgs IMO. While I do enjoy English voices when done with the proper care, it would be nice to hear the original Japanese voices in my favorite games - with Blu-ray, this is definitely a possibility. Also, HD cinemas, full 7.1 surround sound (maybe even uncompressed). People always say that DVD9s are gonna be enough for games, because of compression. But one thing that I've always been annoyed about, is that games with a lot of spoken dialong in them tend to sound overly compressed. Games with the sound quality of a Blu-ray movies are a big welcome in my book. Then, you look down the line, when devs become more familiar with the PS3 as a gaming platform, and we'll probably see more and more of the space being taken up on the disc by gaming assets. Higher resolution textures, more varied levels, etc. And when that happens, games will start using 50gb discs, then maybe even 100gb discs. It may not be apparent now, but in the future, who knows what will be possible. So in no way is giving devs the opportunity to use more space pointless.

Resistance was 22GB but 16 once it was compressed.
Blu ray is good simply for future proofing the console. Games proportionally get larger as time goes on. 95% of the original early games on the ps2 were on cd's. Now 95-100% are on dvd's. If the same is true with the ps3, Sony's very smart for going with blu ray. |

Sorry guys, I guess I wasn't thinking that clearly when I stated that it'll be a waste - a "troll". That was the only thing that I wanted to know. I am not opposed to Blu-ray at all. In fact, I want it to win over the format war. [Actually, the winner has already been decided].
And with your responses, and from my reaction, I can see that MS has lost this war, even if they break their promise to not use HD-DVD for games. Unless they also shift to B-RD... ![]() |

Exactly right. That was a critical mistake that they never fully recovered from and led to other mistakes down the road.

microsoft can not physically use hd-dvd for games as they have stated. the only way it can possibly happen is a console redesign. however, if they do this, they'll alienate their current fan base and will prob end up destroying their product.

I have a feeling that we might be seeing a new XBOX as soon as late 2008... I think by that point they are going to be severely behind in the console wars, and be looking at another chance to steal marketshare from Sony.
