Question Dumb Speaker Question

Is it possible to buy a 5.1 speaker setup and in time buy the additional two to make it 7.1?

I'm wondering because I see most audio soundtracks on BD for now are 5.1 and I know some new releases (including 3:10 to Yuma) are 7.1, so I know 7.1 is the way of the future, but do I have to buy 7.1 right away?

sorry for the dumb question

Yes.

You just have to find timbre matched speakers to your initial 5.1 set, although this is not as important for surrounds as for a center channel.

Not a dumb question at all. Most DVDs and BDs have 5.1 audio tracks, and, like you said, more are coming out with 7.1 tracks. In most cases, the surround back channels are matrixed from the surround tracks. If you have a smaller home theater, in terms of the space it's located, 5.1 will be just fine. Larger rooms benefit more from the extra surround speakers. However, if you have the means, go ahead and get the extra speakers. Your home theater will only benefit from adding the back surround speakers.

Here is a good example of an expandable 5.1 setup:

and the extra set of satellite speakers to complement:
