OK, I will play the game here.

Go to the "Players" section here on the site for advice. Do a "search" and you shall find the answers.

If you don't have a player and are just using it for students. Eat the cost and buy the DVD. You can always EBay the Blu.

if this is a serious question, then blu-ray disc (BD) is a new(er) technology that is not compatible with DVD. DVD's will play in BD players, but not vice versa. you've probably already discovered the vice versa part.

you'll need a new player; take a gander at amazon's BD product page, it'll give you a good idea of the players out there. if it's a player you're going to be using at home too, i'd recommend just going with a ps3 for a variety of reasons. if it's something you're only going to be using at school, i'd suggest maybe you should consider returning the BD and just sticking with DVD for now (unless the school's going to reimburse you for it?)

If your school has a HD TV, you need to connect a PS3 or one of the standalone BD players

If your school does not have a HD TV, you can still watch the downscaled output on regular TV, but you still need a BD player or a PS3. In this case, you might as well stick with DVD. The quality improvement with a SDTV is very barely marginal on color resolution, and even then, need a good SDTV and the right material.

What do you teach? A PS3 by Sony would do it.

I think a BD rewriter would probably be best if your trying to teach.

I would suggest going to a Circuit City, Best Buy, etc. and explain them your needs, and pick up a blu-ray player. What disk did you get? If you got it just for one class, etc.. like "Galapogos" or "Discover Brazil, etc" or the Planet Earth series.... I suggest returning it and buying it in Standard DVD version. You'll save yourself a lot money and frustration for the sake of presenting it to a class.

any other questions feel free to send me a private message, and and I'll try to help as best possible.

it depends. I wouldn't get a PS3 like our fellow member suggested (unless you want to teach the class about video games.) i would get the cheapest sony BD player.

There is no such thing as a Blu-ray disk.

Disk is short for Diskette. Like floppy Diskette.

A Disc is the thing you put into CD/DVD/Blu-ray players.

Not trying to be the bad guy here, but I think it should be pointed out that Blu-rays (like DVDs and VHS tape before them) are not licensed for public viewing. Look at the back of just about any of them, and you will find some form of the phrase 'for home use only'. You will also find wording about unauthorized exhibition. Any other kind of showing requires a separate license. I'm not telling anyone what to do, but you should be informed of what legalities are involved here.

You'll need to buy a blu ray player to play any Blu-ray disc. For right now most players are still in the high $300 range. Unless your school has a blu ray player it won't play on any standard DVD player. If its going to be only at school you'll might want to just go after the dvd version of the disk for now. Sorry for any confusion....

My mother is a teacher, and in over 10 years of being involved in this, I have never heard of a classroom use being prosecuted

Schools usually rent materials from a large media company, and royalties are included, seriously, don't worry about it.

My guess is the class is not equipped with an HDTV anyway so blu-ray would be pointless. Return the disk and get a regular DVD. Then go buy yourself an HDTV and a PS3 for you house and come back and thank us for the suggestion.
