(The Black Cat, both films called The Raven, Haunted Palace, Conqueror Worm and many other (often very good) films.) Poe has been used as short-hand for "horror" very frequently for films completely unrelated to his writing.

You raise a good point. When I decided to start this thread I determined to
include the films based on Poe's stories and that portray him in life. There are
so many films that quote from his verse or that claim to be based on his stories
but aren't actually -- such as The Conqueror Worm / Witchfinder General --
perhaps I'll include those in a separate category. Or not. If you have suggestions
in that regard I'd like to hear them.

Not a film, but PBS did an 84 minute documentary called: American Masters: Edgar Allan Poe: Buried Alive .

It is free to stream on Amazon Prime and also available on DVD; I own the DVD, but I have yet to watch it.

My thanks to you both. It's always the obvious titles I overlook. I have the
Arrow blu-ray of Spirits of the Dead. Outstanding transfer of a superb
film. I can't recommend it highly enough.

I'm ordering the documentary, thanks for the alert.

I agree on both points.

Cusack was a good choice for The Raven but the film disappoints on every level.

If there were a decent biopic I'd know about it. I've written a dramatization
about Poe's last days. It's not a horror film although it would look like one. I
shopped it around for years and I'm very proud of it but I no longer have
hopes of making it. Somebody will make one, one of these days.

Sometimes life comes a little too quick. I bought this film, Extraordinary Tales, back when it was released, and here we are a few years later and I just realized that it's been hidden away from me all of this time unwatched.

You have the right idea with it not being a horror film, yet looking like one. I'm flabbergasted that no one has fulfilled the potential of such a film. Everyone knows Poe. He has a worldwide fanbase. He has a compelling story to tell from his life. The film needs to be made.

Regarding The Raven, I agree completely. A very unsatisfactory effort.

The industry squanders so many opportunities. Like Orson Welles said, the best
movies never get made. In the independent world, same problem. The mistake
would be in trying to do a biopic of Poe's entire life. There's too much going on,
internally. One has to break his life down into phases. Then it becomes doable.
Each phase of his life is a slightly different kind of film.

I do not mean to suggest by that comment that a movie about Edgar Allan Poe does not have great potential, it certainly does, but only that Netflix is eagerly looking to make all the original content that they can.

Another great thread. I absolutely love the Roger Corman adaptations with Vincent Price, and the Arrow releases here in the UK are excellent.
