Default ps3 heating up

I was just watching Live free or die hard and I heard a huming from my ps3, I went near it and it was very hot. I paused the movie and after a few minutes the humming lowered. Any suggestions??

What model do you have? I have the 60gb and mine also got warm at times. I went ahead and purchased the Intercooler from Wal-Mart for like $15-20 and it solved my problem.

Take it off now! had that on my 60gb. then bought an 80gb and sold the 60. week after the guy had it the power supply failed. the intercooler uses the ps3's power supply. coincidence? maybe, but dont take the chance. just put some little PC fans in your HT cabinet to expel a good 10-15 degrees. please take this seriously, as I wish no ones $500 machine to break

It generates a lot of heat especially if it's in a confined space and doesn't have good airflow. The humming was probably the fan speed increasing to help handle the excessive heat.

Intercoolers are junk, and they will void your warrenty, use the search function on this forum. lots of threads.

The noise you heard was the fan changing speeds.

Well I appreciate everyones opinion on the Intercooler. BUT..... I have been using mine for well over a year now and NO problems. And beleive it or not, but it actually does what its supposed to do and keeps my PS3 cool.

And to the original poster, no it isn't big at all. It attaches right to the side of the machine and you really can't even tell its there. It blends with the PS3 perfectly. It will add about 2-3 inches to your machine. I HIGHLY reccomend it.

who are you asking? clearly I love my intercooler. I may be in the minority, I'm not sure. I've never really checked what other peoples opinions are on them because I've never had any reason to. Like I said, I love mine!

Make sure your ps3 isnt in a confined space where heat can surround it. I would use fans instead of the intercooler. Like previously said...it could void your warranty if something goes wrong with your ps3.

you need at least 20 centimeters on the back and right (where the hot air comes out)

reminds me of the old college days when we had three T.V.s set up, one someone would be watching T.V. on usually, or whatever game was on, another my video-game addicted roommates would play on, and on the other we would play movies or another T.V. station.....

What fan do you have? I would like something to cool my system. It's in a Ent. center and it gets warm from time to time.

If you're really bent on buying an intercooler, which I think is a terrible idea, at least get one that plugs directly into the wall outlet and does not have to use the PS3 usb ports. That way it won't defeat the purpose

If your PS3 has 4 inches of clearance for the top, front, and back vents then it should be fine (and you aren't playing in the middle of the desert with no ac).

Only heard bad reviews about the intercoolers.

There is enough room but the whole area warms up and it even warms the wood. There is only one opening in the front of the stand (6x18). Was wondering if anything had a small fan or something I didn't know about.

I have a 60GB PS3. Have it in a cabinet with other home theater equipment next to the TV. Never have a problem with it heating up. However, the entire back side of the cabinet is open. That might help.

Oh and I have left it on for days at a time too! It is like the Energizer bunny.
