Default Smart idea moves for Sony

Thats cool!!! Better than buying an UMD movies while u can copy a movie from Blu-ray Live 2.0 PS3 w/ Blu-ray inside to PSP via remote play or something.

There no other game console like PS3 ever done something like this before.

Yeah, I read about this. Wow, even though I don't have a PSP yet I still think this is great news.

Best use of extra content ever for a disc. Screw PiP, I would rather just have this.

Default Spec of encodes for PSP?

A UMD movie is 720x480 MP4 AVC, a standard resolution (at least for NTSC regions) and standard open source codec.

Did they announce whether this will be the same for the portable versions on BD? If so it will alleviate compatibility worries for devices other than the PSP. All future PMPs really should be able to play 720x480 AVC even if their inbuilt displays, like the PSP, don't show the video at that res.

one question...

If they make a Blu-ray UMD, can the exisiting laser in the PSP read it? I thought Blu-ray and HD-DVD uses special blue laser diodes?

You mean if they made a "Blu-Ray" of the size of a UMD ?
Then I guess not, and this is exactly why they wouldn't do that

I think the reason will have more to do with the dropping price of flash memory. A "Blu-MD" would hold about 10GB. By the time the PSP-2 is announced it will be quite usual to have 32GB in your mobile phone. Blu-MD would be obsolete before it hit the market. Something similar happened to 1GB "High Density" MiniDisc vs DAPs ...

I hope the PSP-2, when it gets here, uses flash only, with games as DLs -- or (if they want to keep traditional retailers involved) sold on read-only flash cards.

NOT INTERESTED

PSP will be soon able to read Divx without MPEG4-PSP transfer

considering screen size and sound conditions, I'll keep divx transfer

plus, a dual layer 50GB blu... will it really take just few minutes to transfer to PSP??

It's only copying a 1GB premade PSP video from the BD!

And how does DivX help? It's just as much work as making your own AVC vid for PSP with poorer quality results than what studios produce for UMD.

Anyone have a guess how they expect to solve for rental BDs? They surely don't want every PSP owner to take a PSP copy of the movie every time they rent a BD.

I, for one, am very excited about this. Instead of having to watch the same few UMD movies over and over, we will be able to make a higher-quality, portable version of movies we already own in a few minutes. Trying to convert DVD's on the computer was a nightmare! And it took a couple hours with so-so results.

This is a great way for Sony to say, "It's like having a portable Blu-ray player." And a nice system seller for PSP.

Default More cheap UMDs

Strangely, at the same time ...

John Koller, senior product manager for the PSP, told Kotaku that
...
SCEA will be publishing a greater amount of cheaper UMD movies, and that he wasn’t concerned about the future of the proprietary movie format following recently demoed technology showing how Blu-ray movie discs can come embedded with PSP-formatted versions of films.

"Any way we can help get that multimedia content onto the PSP, we're going to take it," he said.
