Default PS3 flying off the shelves here in the UK

In the last two weeks I've convinced two other friends to finally jump in bed with 40 gig models, I sold another friend on the 60 gigger several months back, couple of other friends got it and have another mate I convinced eyeing one up to buy soon... and that's just my circle.

All the guys who bought recently or are looking to buy are having serious trouble finding bundles or even PS3's since they seem to finally be flying off the shelf like nobodies business.

Nice, it seems the rumours of Playstation's demise were greatly exaggerated.

All the more recent buyers love the fact that it's a blu-ray player and that it's such a complete home theatre machine... as well as some games.

Good to know. Same here in Italy. Sales are very strong from last few weeks.

GT5 Prologue seems to be selling large quantities as well in the UK, all the high street stores are sold out of it, and I guess some people buying the game didn't previously own a PS3.

Indeed, oh, and forgot to mention another friend + roommates ended up with a new PS3 to complement the PS2 last week.
At this rate they may overtake the 360 sometime in 2009 .
Lots of PS2 owners seem to be jumping into the fray now.

Yeah, they underestimated the number of people that were actually willing to pay more for the 80 gig system. Supposedly working on increasing inventory, that being said, artificially limiting the numbers a little does wonders for desireability doesnt it?

It should be, the biggest release in a long time just hit the system.

People are really eager to pay money to help a company beta test its work. If it worked with Halo 3, then it has to work with GT!

80 Gigs are flying off the shelves here in the US from my observations. I frequent Best Buy, Circuit City, Wal-Mart, and GameStop -- and all they ever have in stock are the 40 GB models.

Right now it looks like the PS3's resurgence in the next-gen console "war" is mostly attributed to Europe. Across the pond, the PS3 has moved to within a 1 million sales differential to the 360. It's happening here in the US, too, but at a much slower pace. I know watching VGChartz is considered arguable by some and loser-ish by many, but I can't help myself. I've watched the PS3 go from a ~20% market share to 21.7% and growing in just a matter of weeks. Good stuff. Looks like the "dead" PS3 has some serious life to it.

Hmm, I don't think it's quite like that.

Within one million of the 360 in Europe! I'm sure when MGS4 hits stores that will move a $#!T load of PS3's.

GT5 Prologue.

For week ending March 29 in the world outside America and Japan:

135K PS/3 (50K more than America + Japan)
375K GT5 (>3x the #2 title)

On the Europe sales charts it also looks like the new PS3s purchased for Gran Turismo have done well for the sales of other PS3 titles. Motorstorm was the 20th best selling game of the week despite being 54 weeks old, with Resistance not far behind at the exact same age. COD4 and Army of Two also outsold their 360 counterparts, which is unusual given the 360's FPS nature. I hope we see a similar trend in the US in two weeks time with GT5. It will be pretty hard to match Europe's love for Gran Turismo, though.

Man, I'm jealous. Mine just sits on the shelf in my cabinet and does nothing but make a low fan hum and get warm. I tried to get it to roll over the other day but it just looked at me like I was crazy.

Urrrm, newp, the 60 gig came out on March 23rd last year, I got that one on release day.

That's pretty much functionally the same as the 80 gig which isn't out here.
