Default Does anyone else hate flying???

I used to love flying and now I HATE IT. I think its a control thing. For example I have control of my car and happen to be a very good driver who has been in one accident and not my fault to boot. Anyway, my lady and I are taking a trip to NEW ENGLAND this week and I am nervous as hell. My buddy keeps putting AVIATION disaster articles in my box at work and I won't tell himn its bothering me but I read everyone and I think I've died in a plane crash already. ANY TIPS? I have my PSP and portable DVD and my SONY EBOOK ready to go. ANY other suggestions would be great.

It's a good thing I don't hate flying, as I'm on a plane going somewhere every week. I'm sure you understand the odds are greater for you dying in a car than on an airplane. I like to read or Suduku to pass the time (or, God forbid, work!). Watch a movie! It's a great way to forget about where you are and what you are doing. Oh, and drink heavily!

I'm with you man. I'm afraid of flying and it's for the same reason. I know the stats show that you have a better chance of dying on the wheel than on a plane but when I'm driving, I have control of the car. In a plane, your life is on another person hands. but I been afraid since I was a small boy but I had no control of telling parents I don't want to get on. but sooner or later I will again.. There's tons of places I wanted to visit in my life time.

But, the odds of surviving a car accident is much greater than surviving a plane crash.

I'm not a big fan of flying either.

I hate flying.

I still have no problems getting on planes and flying when it's practical. I fly often.

But... I feel the whole time that I'm trapped in a death machine.

I guess I make peace with the idea that the plane could explode at any moment and with luck I'll die instantly. I usually fly with my wife and kids and the thought that we all go together is somewhat comforting. (Makes it "neat" in the way that some of us don't have to deal with others of us suddenly gone.)

When i get on the plane i figure if i'm going to die on that plane than that is my destiny.

The last time i flew was with my fiancee and we left our 6 month old at home with my mom and i was completely freaked out the whole time.

I hate flying and i've talked with my finacee and we're going to take cars and trains where ever applicable, but a lot of the time it's just more practical to take a plane.

He hates flying too:

In all seriousness, when I was little I was scared of flying. Being a military brat, I had some experiences riding on AF planes, and let me tell you they're not exactly first class. One trick I remember doing was staying up the night before, so that when it came time for my flight, I went right to sleep.

I am with you OP. It's a control thing for me and the whole crashing thing. If you are in a car, you can pull over in the event of a malfunction or to get gas. Heck, if your window blows out your fine. Whereas on a plane, you can't pull over and if your window blows out, there will be a major problem to say the least. That and I have no control over the plane. Again, control issues.

I have flown a lot when I was a kid so I don't remember much. As an adult, I have only flown three times. Maybe two.

Tell your buddy to stop sending you the crap he is. It might be funny later on, but now, it's not.

1 - There have been NO major accidents for a very long time. So keep that on your mind.

2 - If you fear flying enough - look at your carrier. JetBlu is THE BEST - never had an accident. Delta is another carrier I trust. AA, and the like - bigger and have had accidents. It's the law of probability.

3 - Get your mind set that you are getting on the plane and if something happens out of your control - it's out of your control. Period, the end. Like someone said (it's twisted but works), if you die - you die. It was meant to be that way.

That is how I look at things now. Makes the prospect of getting on a plane a bit easier, but I will always have those questions in the back of my head. Take a Valium or whatever you can to relax and just enjoy the trip. Stay occupied with reading, videos or music. Talk. Enjoy the view from the window. Once you take off and are in the air, it's smooth sailing

Have fun!

Also, that crap people say about it's safer to fly than drive - BS! It MIGHT be, but at least I still have control of my car.

If your going to die that day, your going to die whether its on the plane or walking across the street and mauled by a dog. Im one that doesnt believe we are the ones who choose how or when we die. But yes, as a kid, I used to be terrified, and I get afraid when the plane hits turbulance, but if you live your life scared, then whats the point of living?

Do any over the counter medicines knock you out, like Benadryl? We use to dose our kids before a flight, and they would sleep the whole time.

As for me, I love flying too. I had a chance to go up in a small plane, and actually take the controls for a bit. Prior to that, my only experience flying was on MS flight simulator! Loved every minute of it. My brother-in-law has a small plane, but it has such a small engine in it, I’m not able to go up with him. He’s taken my kids up a couple of times, and they loved it. Worst part of flying for me is lay-overs.

Was hoping someone would pick up on that.

In all honestly, I fly pretty regularly for both business and pleasure. The take-off and landing are probably the most stressful parts.

On the take-off, I'll generally just lean my head back and breath deeply.

On the landing, I HAVE TO look out the window. I don't know why.... as for the initial descent, I read and listen to my iPod.

The thing that worries me is the airline industry is a failing one, losing more money then they take in on a yearly basis. Just like a broke person will skip and prolong maintance on their cars i would bet the same can be said for the airlines in this country. They have already stripped away as much as possible to do things like save weight and eliminate food and beverages, charge for extra baggage, hell they want to charge fat people the cost of two seats now.

No thanks to flying for me, i do not want my life in the hands of a stock holder board who is sick and tired of seeing losses in the millions each quarter.

This reminds me of something I read a while back. Part of the reason fuels costs have risen for airlines is that the average American traveler is heavier (read fatter) than 20 years ago. I guess that's kind of stuck with me since reading it.

Sorry, resume original topic, please
