Unfortunately, all new unmodded blu-ray players, consoles etc are locked to only play discs coded for one region and that's not likely to change. 4K discs are all region free but when it comes to DVDs and blu-rays you are stuck having to deal with region locking. Technically there's no such thing as a "region free" blu-ray, those are in fact coded for all regions (ABC) rather than none but, as you are free to play them anywhere, "region free" is a fair way to describe them. Below you will find lists of:
- REGION A LOCKED 3D blu rays only available in Region A countries (Post #2) - REGION FREE 3D blu rays only available in Region A countries (Post #3) - REGION B LOCKED 3D blu rays only available in Region B countries (Post #4) - REGION FREE 3D blu rays only available in Region B countries (Post #5) - 3D blu rays that are autoconversions (Post #6) It seems that nobody really bothers with Region C locked discs even in Region C countries. In practice, China is generally treated as Region A due to its ownership of Hong Kong and everywhere else is treated as Region B, but discs from those countries (India being a notable one) tend to be region free. Many 3D blu rays get worldwide releases but there are an awful lot of 3D blu rays exclusively available in Region B countries and there's some real classics locked to Region A that look like they will never come out in Region B so really, if you're a lover of 3D, you have no option but to get yourself equipment that enables you to watch Region A and B discs. I know some of the titles listed are also available elsewhere, but not with English subtitles or audio - all the titles on these lists are English-friendly unless otherwise specified. There's a separate thread listing 3D blu rays that aren't English-friendly across all regions. Where such a release has been erroneously described as being English-friendly or only has the English audio on a 2D disc I may list it here, but there will always be a note. In this forum, I've put [Region Free] in the thread title of every movie that's completely region free worldwide. If it says [Region Locked] then it's locked in both regions, so naturally [Region A Locked] or [Region B Locked] means you can only get it locked to that specific region. If it says [Region Locked / Free] then that means that some releases are locked but there is or was a region free release somewhere so look it up. I use rewind in addition to searching this site and forum and reading reviews. You can't always rely on Amazon listings as those are often wrong. Please also note that ALL Disney / Marvel / Pixar 3D blu-rays are REGION FREE with only one exception - Ratatouille, which is locked to Region B. Universal, Paramount, Sony and Warner Brothers also generally don't region lock anything, so you can import their major titles with confidence, though there are a few exceptions. 20th Century Fox, Lionsgate, Kino, Shout Factory, Entertainment In Video and others do tend to lock their releases, so watch out for those, but if you just look the film up here you shouldn't have to ask if it's region free because it will say in the thread title. These are the autoconversions I own or have details for, with ones I don't have (but others have contributed info on) in bold. There's an insane amount of them in Germany. These are basically conversions that don't appear to have had any human involvement - some have an effect much like the 2D to 3D conversion features on some TVs, others are basically a flat 2D image pushed back into the screen, some just have the bottom forward with the top two-thirds pushed back. Needless to say, if a film is on this list, the 3D is going to be very bad. Some are censored too so that's another reason you may well regret your purchase! If I know a film is region free or locked I'll make a note. It's all a bit Wild West in Germany so note that bonus films do vary, as indeed do titles! Again, these are all English-friendly unless otherwise specified:
2035: Forbidden Dimensions (2013) aka The Forbidden Dimensions / German title: Mad Jack - Travelling Forbidden Dimensions. Cut, around 1 min 50 secs missing! FSK18 / Running time 1:24:27. 2:22 The 25th Reich 2-Headed Shark Attack 3-Headed Shark Attack 6 Guns (2010) - Should be Unrated version. FSK16 / Running time 1:35:36 666: The Beast (2007) / German title: Der Antichrist - FSK 18 / Running time 1:28:35 A Better Tomorrow (remake) - also released in the UK, region B locked Age of Dinosaurs (2013) - FSK16 / Running time 1:28:23 Airplane vs Volcano (disc includes Airline Disaster as a bonus film) Alien Predator Alien Trespass All Quiet On The Western Front American Poltergeist 2 (2013) aka The Poltergeist of Borley Forest aka You Will Love me - FSK18 / Running time 1:43:08. Disc includes: American Poltergeist (2015) - FSK18 / Running time 1:19:41 Android Cop Asian School Girls - heavily cut Atlantic Rim (2013) aka Attack from Beneath / German title: Attack from the Atlantic Rim - FSK16 / Running time 1:25:28 Attila (2013) - FSK18 / Running time: 1:25:38. Disc includes: Dracula Reborn (2012) - FSK18 / Running time 1:29:16 Bates Haunting, The (2012) aka The Haunting of Bates Motel - Cut, 27 seconds missing. FSK18 / Running time 1:17:07. Disc includes: Cannibal (2010) / German title Menschenfresserin). French movie, not English friendly! Cut, around 3 minutes missing. FSK18 / Running time 1:44:01 Battledogs Bear Blood Lake: Attack of the Killer Lampreys (2014) - FSK18 / Running time 1:26:51. As my Region A player has an issue with the disc loading slot, I don't want to use it to randomly test out hundreds of discs so I will be more reliant on those in Region A to confirm if any of the titles in the lists above are really region free or have been released in Region A somewhere.
For Americans relying on these lists, please remember that Region A is not just America - there are quite a few titles you can (or could) get in other Region A countries like Mexico, Brazil, Thailand, Japan, Korea and Hong Kong; Outback, A Liar's Autobiography, Ratchet & Clank, The Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 2, Terminator 2, Valerian, Need For Speed and Robinson Crusoe for example, so that's why you won't see those in the lists above. Then there's India, which in theory is Region C but 3D releases there tend to be region free so that's another option. It will take me a while to list everything I have/know as I don't want to list anything incorrectly, but if anyone posts anything in this thread I will update the list(s) in the posts above with that as a priority. Needless to say, if there's anything missing or wrong, just let me know. Last edited by the13thman; 02-27-2021 at 09:34 PM. Reason: merged threads |

Ah, and to think the one who mistook the photo to be Louis Jordan was the one who gave you the final push to finally start putting this list together! ![]() |

Hi 13th,
That many titles not available for you chaps in region B? Lovers of martial arts films must be quite disappointed if they only own a B region player. Though not martial arts, Wolf Totem was a wonderful story beautifully captured in 3D. |

I think in these stupid times anything that encourages people to go region free and buy more 3D blu rays is a good thing.

Indeed. The Chinese conversions are of varying quality but even so, there are more than enough excellent 3D movies on that list to justify going region free for. As it happens, there are more Region B titles unavailable in Region A, so the argument goes both ways... Last edited by the13thman; 02-05-2017 at 06:58 PM. |

thanks for doing this! going to be increasingly reliant on imports, and i find the sites i buy from in the UK often have incorrect region code data.
as an aside, this is a crappy way to find out that one of my favorite movies, Ratatouille, actually had a 3D release. bummer. |
