Great now how about an official USB-IR adapter so that we can use our Universal Remotes?

And an official PS2-PS3 adapter so that I can play Guitar Hero on PS3 while we're at it? *grumbles*

If they could only break out the multi channel audio that way, I would be buying a PS3 tomorrow.

Is there some crazy way some kind of adapter could be rigged where you'd plug an HDMI cable into something and the output could be HDMI video to your display and somehow the audio could be sent to multichannel analogs?

In other words: Can I somehow not have to buy a $2000+ receiver to get the job done with my PS3?

I must say: They are gouging people on their first party cables for this system.

Are the receivers going to cost around $2k? If they are, you might as well get a panny with built in 7.1 analogs.

But you see, here's the problem:

I have a perfectly good Harman Kardon AVR635 that's got everything I need except, of course, anything HDMI related. It's got the multichannel analogs and everything else.

The PS3 can only do advanced audio codecs over HDMI. No analog outputs of any kind.

I really don't want to replace the HK 635 anytime real soon. I shouldn't have to, either. It's perfectly good and has everything I need.

Yep. Panasonic SA-XR57 for US$280.

Seriously though, a conversion box should be easy to build so long as it is HDCP compliant. I don't know if LPCM is part of the protected audio covered under HDCP; if it is, you're out of luck there.

PS3 -> HDMI Conversion box - LPCM 5.1-7.1
- HDMI Out for 1080p HDCP video

Technically not hard to do. It's the right DACs and power supply that you have to worry about.

I should know this but..

What is preventing a multi channel analog audio out - is it cost or technical?

If it's cost I could certainly see a third-party bringing one out soon.

I wonder if it could be done?

If you look at the back of the PS3, they'd have to use that MultiAV out which means one end would be that proprietary PlayStation connection and the other end would be the multichannel analogs.

After that, there would have to be a firmware that adds the necessary options to the PS3's audio configuration menus.

It almost sounds too easy.

Sweet I just ordered one of these.

Currently I have a Panasonic SA-XR25 but it's a refurb and every now and then the sound starts to crackle and I need to swtich inputs in order to fix it. It's a pain. :/

Hopefully the SA-XR57 will kick ass. Shame that it doesn't upsale all inputs to HDMI but I am looking forward to perfect video and audio!

Ok, hold on here.

This Panasonic for $300. Don't you need HDMI 1.3 to have all the bells and whistles?

Set me straight on all this, please.

An HDMI 1.3 reciver can receive the advance audio formats compressed so that hopefully they can decode them. HDMI 1.1 receiver can allready receive the uncompressed digital audio.

1.3 would be necessary only if you have a receiver that can decode the HD audio codecs. Since I'm planning on using the PS3 which can decode Dolby TrueHD already, it passes the 5.1PCM decoded audio straight through HDMI and you get perfect lossles sound. The only drawback is the PS3 (or any player yet) can't decode DTS HD lossless. Hopefully this will be included in a FW update. 1.1 HDMI capable receivers are OK if you're in a budget.
