Talking Cattle Annie and Little Britches - Kino Lorber Release

I don't think this film has a forum thread so I want to start one. As a fan of Westerns this one was on my radar since it was announced by Kino. I resisted pulling the trigger on the pre order, pun intended, due to seeing poorish comments online. I hate getting burnt on a blind buy. I mostly was interested due to it being an early Diane Lane film, and Burt Lancaster's last western ( I think). Then the pre order price dropped to around 14 bucks! I just got my copy and due to self quarantine wasted no time popping it in. I am happy to report that it is a very nice little western, and no buyers remorse. It's a charming film with a great cast, well acted, pleasing music, and a ton of charm. Have the right expectations. It's not an epic, but rather a nice intimate sweet story. Maybe a little sweeter than it should have been, but it's a nice change of pace.

This was not Burt Lancaster’s last film.

Ha! If you insist. Sure looked like him and his name is on the cover art.

What? I didn’t doubt that he wasn’t in the film.

Happy to hear the Bd is solid.
I've been wanting to see this for decades, for the exact same reasons you cited.

I was happy to find it available at Target last week, and worked with the B2G1 offer. Averaged out it came to a quite reasonable $11 and change. I'm sure it will be cheaper when it's included in a future Kino sale, but for something I was waiting for so long, that was plenty cheap enough under the circumstances.
It was delivered yesterday, but I probably won't get around to spinning it for another day or two.

I think this is a wonderful little film. The old VHS release in the UK was cut so much but this longer full version is so much better. Diane Lane really shows that even back then (at 14 years old) that she had so much star potential and charisma (that Hollywood has rarely let her use sadly). Burt Lancaster and a great cast including Scott Glenn, John Savage, Rod Steiger, Amanda Plummer, and of course, Diane Lane are all exceptional! Definitely worth a blind buy if you are fans of westerns or any of the starry cast.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one who appreciated this little film. I hope that this thread encourages people to pick-up a copy in support of more releases!

Big thanks to Kino for releasing this movie! I don't think it ever got a DVD or VHS release in the U.S.

Who would have thought we'd get A Little Romance and Cattle Annie And Little Britches on blu-ray in the same year? I don't want to sound greedy but we need more Diane Lane blu-rays:
  • Touched By Love - Probably our only hope is for Sony to release it as part of their MOD line.
  • Six Pack - A lost cause because Disney bought Fox.
  • Ladies And Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains - Paramount has finally started releasing catalog titles again so who knows? In the meantime, it is available in HD digitally.
  • National Lampoon's Movie Madness - Like Cattle Annie And Little Britches, it is owned by MGM but Kino gave a non-committal answer when asked if they would license it:

Me too. Diane Lane to me is one of the most beautiful, talented, but sadly, underrated actresses in Hollywood. People remember her for 'Unfaithful' of course, and maybe as Cherry Valance in 'The Outsiders', and maybe, as Martha Kent in the recent Superman films... but she is great in everything she's in. A quality actress. 'Fabulous Stains' is of particular interest as it is SUCH a punk film with a cult following.

Saw this one several times at the drive in. Love the performance of Amanda Plummer as Cattle Annie, what a little fireball. One can see why Tarantino chose her to star opposite Tim Roth for the opening and closing scenes of Pulp Fiction. Powerful little actress. It's also impressive how director Lamont Johnson gets a fine, subtle performance from Rod Steiger where he isn't chewing up the scenery. Had a VHS I made from Cable, then purchased a really nice DVD from the UK and have now just ordered the bluray.

I agree. I don't remember there ever being a UK DVD release? Was it VHS? Plummer and Diane Lane's interactions and chemistry really make the film imho.

You're right. I just checked my old DVD and it's a Sidonis release out of France.
