Question How long will DVD still be alive?

Now that Blu-ray is strongly supported, how long will DVD will be around? I give it about 10 years. How about you?

Blu-Ray is strongly supported in the HD community, but it's still not mainstream. DVD has around three more strong years. IMO.

I think maybe we're underestimating the general public. It seems that with HD televisions comes the desire to enjoy HD material. And now with the prices of players dropping it's inevitable that most families WILL be enjoying Blu-Ray discs very soon. Sooner than even DVDs all those ten years ago. All this goes back to HD televisions. In one year I can guarantee 90% of families with HD televisions will own Blu-ray disc players too. Because they want to enjoy their televisions capabilities. So in the end it'll be reliant on the sale of HD televisions. Of course DVD will be around for a long while, but I doubt it'll be around as long as VHS was.

Now of course all this is just my crazy reasoning, but it makes sense to me.

At least a decade.

It's going to be another 4-5 years before Blu players are cheap enough CEs start stopping DVD player production, and at least another 5 years.

There will be no rush to convert like last time. This will be osmotic. People buy a new TV ,take advantage of a discount on a new player. You have to catch them on the rebound when their chinese junk DVD player dies

There also has to be more of a first week price equilibrium with DVD. If the DVD is $14.99, the Blu can at most be $16-18.99

Given that vhs tapes are still sold, I'd say another 20 years or so.

5 more years I'm still spending $400 a month on DVD vs. $50 on blu-ray. I just ordered 3 movies for about $200 on DVD from Korea.

Well, extrapolating from the number of years I've been collecting DVDs, I would say five or more years. I predict I will still be watching the majority of my movies on DVD until we're past the five-year mark.

948 days, 12 hours and 13 minutes!

Okay, honestly, about 4-5 years until Blu is cheap enough to compete with the 15$ Apex throwaways.

Ditto. DVD will be around for a long, long time. Both DVD and Blu-ray will coexist. I wouldn't be surprised if DVD has the same life cycle as CD has had.

D'oh,

The life cycle CD "HAD".

Its really dead isn't it. Damn,... I hate MP3's (if it means no more CDs). I'm typing on a macbook but Apple sux for killing CD.

Makes me fear youtube all the more.

Well, I said "has had," not in the sense that it's obsolete but the life cycle it has been given. Heck, I still only buy CD's when it comes to music. Can't stand MP3's. I wish DVD Audio or SACD would have gotten higher than niche status.

It will depend on the switch over to digital OTA broadcast and J6P can see some HD content it may help the switch from DVD. Also, catalog DVD sales are slowing down so most people are just buying new releases which will help Bluray since most releases are current movies/tv. But I think it's safe to bet that DVD will be around at least 3-4 years.

Considering not all movies benefit from an HD rebuy and are good enough even upconverted, I would say five years probably.

I rethought my decision to rebuy quite a few movies, realizing that a Blu Ray release would not be anything significant over an upconvert.

Currently (with exceptions of course), only the newer movies are prospering from a HD format.
