Default How long until DVD dies?

With warner now focusing all it's efforts on blu-ray effectively setting a new presidence in home media that other studios are sure to follow in a very soon. We can now get a glimpse into the future and see that it is the major studios that will kill off dvd and by the looks of it sooner rather than later.

How long do u thing it will take dvd to die and give your thoughts as what might happen between then now.

I'm a sucker for a good poll. I say 7 years. By 2015 time the eyes of America will start to open and realize the writing has been on the wall for DVD for some time now.

But an even better question is, how long before these types of polls stop getting created?

* 1 year
* 2 years
* 3 years
* 4 years
* 5 years
* Depends on the moderators.

4 years until it's parity with Blu-Ray.

After that 2 years to finally finish off DVD.

After that 2 years for Microsoft to start selling off their divisions to cover the losses of their Xbox Division.

3 years 7 months 4 days 18 hours 48 minutes and 12 seconds. That's the exact time it will be until there's an announcement that Disney will no longer sell any DVDs and after that it will be a domino effect!

dvd is rapidly dying faster then hd dvd and vhs.

Blu-ray and UMD for PSP are the future today in movie formats.

Cool

Anyone who bought an HDTV within the first 5 to 10 years of release are "early adoptors" for all intensive purposes. That core group of early adoptors are buying blu-ray. As this trend increases, the demand for DVD naturally drops.

Since I became a blu-ray "elite schmuck" I REFUSED to put a dime toward DVD. Therefore, Shrek the Third and Transformers were requested gift items. Yes, I'll replace them with the BD versions. Though I SWORE I would never buy another DVD, I remember that I still buy the blanks for personal use.

While I know that some devotees still buy DVD of various nature not available on BD, the day WILL come when movies only come on blu-ray. On the other hand, DVD's will continue to thrive in the smaller aftermarket. They will be used to play those product infomercials on in-store tv's. The kind you see at the end of BJ' isles. Or they will be used to provide "video instructions" inside certain products, and low rate training films.

DVD is still a cheaper alternative for backup than BD, and holds much more than a CD. There was a time that if you burned only 300 mb to a 700MB CD the shame of it was the lost 400 mb. But who cares today? In time, the 4GB loss of putting 700MB's on a 4.7 GB DVD will be just as frivolous. The discs will be so cheap that almost no one will care.

In short, blu-ray will become the defacto standard for movies. But DVD will remain a standard for a LONG time. I say CD has more to lose.

Don't think i agree with u that dvd will have a long life in the smaller market. What u have to rember is a blu-ray player is also a dvd player and once blu-ray players start to fall under $100 dollars a stand alone dvd player will become obsolete so i don't see how dvd is going to have any profitability in 5 years. I was in HMV in Edinburgh to day and i see the chart DvDs next to the chart blu-ray.

Chart DvDs are £16.99 a chart Blu-Ray 19.99 a diffrence of only £2.00. The hardware is going to get cheap within the next two years i don't see dvd being any where in 4 years other than dead.

What you need to remember is that DVD and players will always be cheaper than blu-ray. If you are putting thousands of players and demo discs all over the country, the cost of BD adds up.

I maintain that in-store advertising for products like the wonder mop, or super tools will be played on DVD media and player. No one NEEDS to advertise stick-it lights in Hi-def in the store. Except in the case of blu-ray itself.

On a practical level, yes, all movies will be BD one day. But DVD still has lots of preference as the first born.

I might buy a wonder mop if it's in HD

I chose 10+. It will only die if bluray becomes standard and a new media disk comes out.

10+, in America, the average person still does not have an HDTV. If you dont own an HDTV, why buy BD? They wont. THey are forcasting 12.6 million HDTVS in america by the end of 2008. They say about 15% of america owns a HDTV. Potentially, thats only 15% of people you can sell BD too. Now going forward, you really cant buy any TV except for HD, so the number will increase, but it will not be an avalanche.

Hmm well. heres my take. DVD only started to become big around 1997, that was about 10 years ago. I remember getting a dvd player when they first came out for around $300-$400 and then watching them drop to around $30 bucks. I was glad to say that the dvd player we got lasted us till we got a blu-ray player. By 2006 VHS was dropped. About the time blu-ray came in. So for dvd to take over it took about 9 years.

So maybe about 7-8 years. But then you do see that dvds have dropped majorly in price. Down to $7 and under for a lot of them. So we may see dvd being dropped pretty soon. But instead of just bringing on a new movie playing system consumers also will need an HDTV to truly experience. So i guess i would stick with saying 7-8 years.

EDIT: but here again, they're saying blu-ray is being adopted much faster than dvd. so maybe sooner.

I think DVD will still be around for many years to come. But I do see the coming of another HD format for movies making a run at BD. It will probably be some kind of HDDVD rehash.

BD is the way to go and I find myself ignoring any new releases on DVD. But I think some people will cling to DVD until it is absolutely dead, until there are no longer players or DVD movies being produced.
In the case of my parents and step-parents (all in their early 60's), while they are not fond of many new technologies, they do love gadgets. All my parents (4 to be exact) want a Blu-ray player. I think it's because they love to watch movies. I can't see them downloading from iTunes, but I totally see them going Blu and me having to buy them a BD player.
