Default Blu ray sountracks question.

Have a quick question. A friend of mine just purchased a PS3 that he uses as his blu ray player. He has an older receiver that is not hdmi. He went to watch Ice Age 2 and also Mr. Brooks. There was no sound. Looking into things further, both of those movies are using the new hd sound format, which is only available through hdmi. Is his only way around this,to go out and buy a hdmi receiver? Why are some blu ray discs soundtracks only available in the new hd format? He is just happy with just the regular 5.1 format,it does not have to be hd.
