I'm new to BluRay, having just purchased a player on BF. Got the Samsung 1500 and like it, but I've noticed a lack of titles with an English DD 5.1 sountrack. Is this the trend?
My current receiver is an old Pioneer Elite that only handles DD 5.1. I'm not a huge audiophile (gasp!!) and have found a used Yamaha DTS receiver for $75. If I purchase the DTS receiver, it's my understanding that the player will re-encode the HD audio into DTS 5.1. Is this correct? Any help is appreciated. |

There are three main types of audio on Blu-ray and your current receiver should handle two of them without a problem. PCM soundtracks are compatible with basically every audio receiver ever made so you are fine for those. Also, whenever you see Dolby TrueHD on the disc there is a hidden (or sometimes not hidden) companion Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack that your BD player will automatically play. The only problem you will have is with DTS-HD MA soundtracks because you need DTS capability on your receiver to enjoy those. I would recommend upgrading your receiver. Ask this question again in one of the audio forums here and you will get good suggestions on a cheap receiver for your needs.

Ok, thanks for the clarification! I found a Yamaha HTR-5560 that will fit my needs until I can get a wife approval for something that will support HD capability.

Yeah.. i mean 75$ is cheap and it support everything you need. DTS HD MA track have a DTS 1.5mbits core witch would be completly compatible with you're new receiver. DTS HD MA is used more and more (Disney now, Lionsgate, Fox, Universal, asian release). I don't know why but it's like that.

There is no lossy PCM. PCM is always uncompressed audio. Its the same as a CD.
PCM will play in stereo, stereo surround, or 5.1 surround depending on the track and the equipment. Most Blu-ray Players, even the chaap Magnovox/Funai/Insignia and Olevia brand are capable decoding the DTS/DTS HD/DTS HD Master Audio tracks and outputting them as PCM signals to the receiever. With an optical/coaxial connection, the best sound you will get is PCM 2.0 (Stereo) Surround. |

DTS and PCM would play in 2.0. Dolby Digital is the only one that plays in 5.1 when your receiver decodes the audio. For DTS tracks, you can switch it so that the player actually does the decoding. It's mandatory that ALL Blu-ray players decode both Dolby Digital and DTS.
