Quote:
THE PLANNED Deadpool spin-off, featuring Ryan Reynolds' sword-wielding character from X-Men Origins: Wolverine, is to be a reboot, says producer Lauren Shuler Donner.

Comic book fans were not entirely happy with the way the character was portrayed at the end of Wolverine when Deadpool, aka Wade Wilson, was given additional powers including implanted arm blades, the eye-blasts of Cyclops and the teleportation ability of Wraith.

Reynolds has always maintained this version was more 'the creature that becomes Deadpool' and still allowed the opportunity to expand and evolve the so-called merc with a mouth in the proposed spin-off.
Asked about the solo movie, Donner told IGN: "We'd kind of reboot it and make it the Deadpool that's in the comics."

And she confirmed Ryan Reynolds would play the role again: "Yes, he would [return for it]. I'd like to see Deadpool, so we'll see where we are moving forward on that. I'm hoping to make a movie out of Deadpool."

There was some worry when Reynolds signed on to play DC Comics hero Green Lantern in the Warner Bros film, with cries of 'traitor' from rabid fanboys. But, as I reported earlier, Donner had said in another interview there should be no issue with the actor playing both roles: "I think you can do different characters. We've had different Bonds, right? And I think if Harrison Ford can be in Indiana Jones and he can be in the Tom Clancy movies, I think if you are a good actor you become the character and it's all right."

The comic book version is a masked anti-hero known for his wisecracks, pop-culture references and also for 'breaking the fourth wall' (addressing the reader directly). The comics actually mention Ryan Reynolds by name so it's always seemed inevitable that the actor would play the part.

Donner also confirmed that the recent Marvel/Disney deal would not affect the status of Marvel's X-Men characters whose film rights are with 20th Century Fox: "Evidently they carved out the X-Men world and kept that at Fox, and so we're fine."
----------------------------

Not sure if Reynolds would be the highest authority on this as of yet. It is, after all, being made at FOX

Quote:
It’s the dream of every comic-book fan, whether they’ll admit it or not. The chance to become your favorite character, impact his story, and help determine his future.

Now, after years of lobbying for the role and finally being rewarded with a huge opening for his debut in the recent “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” Ryan Reynolds has complete control over the character of Wade Wilson. Recently, he clued us in on some of the characters he expects to see in the “Deadpool” spinoff movie — but, as he told us, the best part of the gig is the hands-on approach that he’s been given in developing it.

“I love it, because I get to be involved,” Reynolds said of his role in the fast-tracked development of a Deadpool spin-off film. “And I’m such a huge fan of the character.”

Currently, Reynolds and the studio are seeking a director and writer(s) for the film, and listening to plenty of ideas about where Wade’s story should go. Fortunately for the die-hard fans, Reynolds has no intention of letting the film stray too far from its comic origins.

“I get to be the authentication police, in a weird way,” grinned Reynolds, who will show his versatility this month in the refreshingly-decent romantic comedy “The Proposal” June 19th. “To their credit — the studio’s credit — they want to make an authentic ‘Deadpool’ movie; they want to make it as close to the source material as possible.”

With that in mind, the actor told us that he and the studio have already agreed to some key terms. “He’s going to be the Merc with the Mouth, [we’re going to give] all those answers that everyone wants,” Reynolds explained. “He’s going to have the scarred-up face, he’s going to be in the suit — and, it’s going to be incredible.”

So, as the actor and his studio begin assembling their team, Reynolds is bringing his “authentication police” skills to finding similar-minded people who can tell the fractured tale of the deadly mutant. “Right now, it’s just a question of trying to figure out what is the spine of the story,” Ryan said of their current discussions. “Who is the villain? What does Wade and/or Deadpool want?”

“And how do you tell that story? Are we going to see flashbacks to his old life, flash-forwards, present-day?” an obviously enthusiastic Reynolds added. “We’re just trying to figure that stuff out.”

I was shocked when I saw that Reynold was doing Green Lantern, but as long as Deadpool is still in the works I'm cool with that.

I had never heard of Deadpool prior to the Wolverine movie to be quite honest. But I like what he has to say about it thus far. Only time will tell how this works out...

An update of sorts. Looks like they're planning on doing a reboot

Good news. Though it sounds like they have not really moved forward at all.
Thanks!

A reboot would be so easy for this. They could even start it out with by hanging a lampshade on the idea of comic book reboots/retcons and also use that to introduce the audience to breaking the fourth wall.

As long as he doesn't have arm blades and cyclops beams, I think I'll be happy with it though. And while it doesn't appear there is much "progress" if they're resolutely in the position of "kind of a reboot", that's something.

The Dead Pool at the end of Wolverine was a let down. I thought all those mutants would team up and try and take him down and we'd see just how powerful he was/is. Nope - nothing like that.

Instead, we got Night Crawler with Cyclops blast and swords. . . all those mutant powers and we get that?!

Was not impressed. I'll need to see a REALLY good trailer to make me want to see this movie.

I personally don't think a reboot's necessary, especially since they're keeping the same actor. Just start it off with him escaping Weapon X in a state closer to the comics. Just say they recovered him after his fight with Wolverine and he was altered through further experiments. They could cover it in 5 minutes. Then jump the story ahead a number a years and you're good to go.

This would be a retcon, essentially a reboot of sorts given the nature of the character as he exists within current continuity.

They'd do better to just completely start out the movie and just say "Think of Deadpool's appearance in Wolverine as a what-if story, that didn't happen: THIS is the real story." Because seriously, Deadpool is NOT Weapon XI, and to follow a movie from the point of him actually being Weapon XI is just ridiculous.

It just eats me up inside that they didn't use Omega Red as Weapon XI. He would have made so much more sense and wouldn't have pissed off comic book fans as much I expect.

Or just follow the comics standard approach - say that in order to have the Wolverine Deadpool have the amalgamation of powers/dna it required a clone. The original is what the Deadpool movie is based on.

Pay close attention to her wording. "We'd kind of reboot it and make it the Deadpool that's in the comics." It's not an actual reboot. They'll just have the character lose the extra powers and no longer be a mute. They'll probably finally give him his trademark costume (or something similar) as well. I very much doubt we're getting a reboot. Lauren Shuler Donner would have stated it more directly if it was truly to be a reboot.
