Default Will prices go up or down now?

Do you think that, since there is no competition now, BD prices will rise, or that, since more people will buy it now that there's no threat of failure and it's more marketable, prices will fall?

I don't really know, but I'll guess they'll fall.

I should have added a 'They'll stay the same option'

History of consumer electronics suggests prices will go down. This wont happen overnight of course.

There is not competition with another format, but there is still competition within the studios for your money and within the CE manufacturers themselves. They all want your money, so prices will come down.

It will take time as more studios accept BD and more consumers also.Prices will come down but it will take some time.

They will rise initially, and over the very long term start to fall.

It will seem like they will rise because there will be less incentive for any buy 1 get 1 sales or anything of that nature. Blu-Ray doesn't have to outsell anyone now...that all being said, guess they'll still be trying to get more players into the market (like DVD did a few years back) so that may be where the good deals are.

No competition?

Hum, should I get a Sony Bluray, or a Panasonic bluray, or a Pioneer Bluray, or a Samsung bluray,
no wait there is a Sharp bluray over there, or a Denon bluray.
That is just now. How about the rest of the CEs like JVC, Onkyo, Philips, et all.
Wait till smaller CEs like Oppo comes out with one.
You will see a HUGE push for Blu this Xmas season like never before.
Just in time to remind everyone that the major networks are going HD only.
When even more sets are bought, more bluray players will be bundled with them.
It will be all good, watch.

+1
The real competition is Standard DVD. BD will have to lower prices to make an even better impact on DVD sales. Having a Blu exclusive movie not released on SDVD would be awesome as well. IMHO

Agreed.

Anyone who thinks they will go up is either a} a retard b} a moron or c} someone who doesn't understand that prices go up naturally after Christmas sales and also doesn't realize that prices will go down naturally given time.

prices will be going down, I predict to see affordable players $100-$200 by this Christmas, and even cheaper bargin players the following year. By having a clear winner in the format war smaller companys like Coby and Emerson and similar companies can now enter the market producing more affordable players.

I don't see the price of discs going anywhere anytime soon. I know their MSRP is usually pretty high, but its pretty easy to find titles $15-$25, at the same time when new release DVD's are also priced around $15-$25 which i think is too expensive. The price of DVD's still needs to go down before Blu-Ray disc prices are to go down.

Down. Why?

1) All Blu-ray CE's are competing against Toshiba right now. Once HD-DVD is gone, they will all start competing with each other.

2) Prices go down once the CE's recover the money they spent on research and development. Companies lose money while they're developing products. They had to pay all their engineers and technicians, etc. There's lots of hardware costs, overtime, licenses, engineering dinners, etc. This is why NEW things are more expensive. Once the CE's get their money back, then prices go down.

3) Wide adoptation. If more people buy the product, the CE's can afford to lower the price of each unit, and still come out with a decent profit.

i think since there will be nobody competing with blu-ray once hd-dvd is gone there will be no reason for price wars so blu-ray can charge whatever they like most likely up

I think they will stay the same for a while then start to fall. At some point they'll have to be more competitive against DVD if they hope to make a dent in DVD sales (assuming that's what the studios want). But, to people that only buy when there is a sale, the price might seem higher to them because I think we'll have less BOGOs, sales, etc. I think a lot depends on what the studios want though. Do they want high-def media to grow slowly or do they want it to quickly start biting into DVD sales?

Edit: My post is about blu-ray discs (movies), not the players. Not sure that was clear.

As the disc pressing plants withdraw their HD-DVD lines and focus on blu-ray, blank blu's will be more readily available and their unit cost should drop.

Blu isn't competing with the equally expensive HD-DVD anymore, it is competing with DVD's that in many cases cost a quarter of the price - if they don't get cheaper they won't sell to anyone other than people who frequent blu-ray forums and the occasional curious PS3 owner.

If they want to really make Blu-Ray a mass phenomenon, they definitely need to lower prices.

If they want to market it primarily to videophiles like us, then prices will stay the same, or rise.

It will never catch on mainstream with John Q. Public, at a minimum $399 per player.
