Default Will prices go up or down now?

Do you think that, since there is no competition now, BD prices will rise, or that, since more people will buy it now that there's no threat of failure and it's more marketable, prices will fall?

I don't really know, but I'll guess they'll fall.

I should have added a 'They'll stay the same option'

History of consumer electronics suggests prices will go down. This wont happen overnight of course.

There is not competition with another format, but there is still competition within the studios for your money and within the CE manufacturers themselves. They all want your money, so prices will come down.

They will rise initially, and over the very long term start to fall.

It will seem like they will rise because there will be less incentive for any buy 1 get 1 sales or anything of that nature. Blu-Ray doesn't have to outsell anyone now...that all being said, guess they'll still be trying to get more players into the market (like DVD did a few years back) so that may be where the good deals are.

No competition?

Hum, should I get a Sony Bluray, or a Panasonic bluray, or a Pioneer Bluray, or a Samsung bluray,
no wait there is a Sharp bluray over there, or a Denon bluray.
That is just now. How about the rest of the CEs like JVC, Onkyo, Philips, et all.
Wait till smaller CEs like Oppo comes out with one.
You will see a HUGE push for Blu this Xmas season like never before.
Just in time to remind everyone that the major networks are going HD only.
When even more sets are bought, more bluray players will be bundled with them.
It will be all good, watch.

No competition??? Where was I when standard DVDs stopped being competition? While HD DVD may no longer be a competitor studios still want the consumer to embrace high definition and the new format. Let's face it the vast majority of consumers are still buying standard definition disks. I don't have an HD TV and the reason that I buy Blu-rays instead is because they are only slightly more expensive (thinking new releases here) then the counterpart on standard DVD. I figure that eventually I will have the HD TV and want to actually watch my movies in HD... so I am thinking of the future. However, if the price goes up with the death knell of HD then I could very well be rethinking that decision.

As more and more people adopt blu-ray, the prices will start too fall. Give it a year, or at the very least, this Christmas season. We'll see some big sales going on I bet.

I know this wasn't exactly what you meant, but when do you think we will be seeing teevees with blu-ray players in built into them?

FallenAngel is right, Blu-Ray still has a major competitor in standard DVD. The Blu-Ray/HD-DVD war was not a war at all for Blu-Ray- just a battle. Remember when everyone was trumpeting that 300 sold 300,000 copies of Blu and only 160,000 (something like that) of HD-DVD? That really did not mean much in the grand scheme of things because 300 sold 6 million copies on standard DVD. Standard DVD is the market that Blu must take over, in fact I would be surprised if the Blu-Ray line is even profitable at this point because of the low revenue stream, when compared to standard DVD, of software sales. Point being, there is no way that Blu-Ray will rise in price and will most likely go down. Imagine telling the consumer- "We won, come buy Blu-Ray, but by the way prices just went up 20%". That would be market suicide.

Fall: as other companies discovered that BD is the only way to go, they will start to make BD and Sony and other original backers will face great challenge on pricing of BD. No way the price will goes up
