New challenge (HD VMD)? - Blu-ray Forum

Time to face the music, dear HD DVD fans. The red format is officially dead, and unless HD VMD makes an unprecedented run here in the next few weeks, we've all ideas that Blu-ray will take the throne in the high-definition disc war. That being said, we know there are hordes of folks out there now stuck with an HD DVD player -- not to mention the corresponding media -- that is quickly becoming a tainted collector's item. So, what are you to do? Move on and side with the Blu camp? Revolt and pick up a VUDU? We know it's a touchy subject, so feel free to let loose in comments below.

I sold my HD DVD Player and movies a month ago, at cost

and have not looked back.

Blu-ray is effectively the only high def format going forwards. Other formats are not worth discussing.

is there any support for this format? Besides, the way that industry is moving and the current market penetration of BLU makes it seem unlikely that a completely new format could really make an impact at this time. Retailers and studios don't want another war. VMD won't be a challenge. I'll be shocked if it even reaches market

I'm not entirely sure what the makers of HD VMD are aiming for, I guess a small business venture of some sort.
I doubt that even the most deluded or enthusiastic backer actually thinks it's a serious attempt at a standard.

Seriously, after this format war, retailers will not let another one happen so soon.

I shot mine to hell, then I got a free A2 & this time im getting it on 'film' !!! That was my only regret the first time around

Heck you gotta be scared of that format when ones of its partners is listed as the Lazytown kids TV programme!!!

I have both formats and will keep the player and the movies. I understood going in that one would lose in the end. My entertaiment center still has a laser disk player in it so the HD player will not be the only dead format in there. Everyone makes it sound like it is the end of the world. I bet tomorrow will be just like yesterday, meaning the sun will come up and all will be good. Now that there is only one I would like to see an increase in releases as well as prices dropping. To me $30 for a new movie is a joke. I do not want to hear that it is cheap when compared to going to the movies to see it that is crap and a copout. You can find DVDs for under $10 there is no excus for not doing the same with the HD formats. If Hollywood was really concerned about piracy like they say there are they will drop prices quickly to get rid of DVD quickly.

Any way like I said the HD player will be next to the laser disk player and they can talk about old times together. And before you get nasty I have over 75 blu movies.

There's no motive for people to buy HD VMD, meaning there's no motive to sell it, or for studios to support it.

Besides, HD VMD is pretty bad. It's got 5GB per layer and four layers standard, meaning 20GB standard. With the four layer 100GB Blu-Rays Hitachi say can play in the already-released BD players + a simple firmwire update, HD VMD is just a poor imitation of Blu-Ray.
