Default Splendor In The Grass (1961) coming from Warner Archive

Quote:
COMING FROM THE WARNER ARCHIVE COLLECTION ON JUNE 24th!

New 2025 1080p HD Master from 4K Scan of the Original Camera Negative

SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS (1961)
BD 50
NOT RATED
COLOR
Aspect Ratio: 16x9 1.85:1
Audio Specs: DTS-HD MA 2.0 Mono
Subtitles: English SDH
Running Time: 124 Minutes
NOT RATED

Cast: Natalie Wood, Warren Beatty, Pat Hingle, Audrey Christie

SPECIAL FEATURES: Feature-length documentary ELIA KAZAN: A DIRECTOR’S JOURNEY, Original Theatrical Trailer.

Deanie (Natalie Wood in an Oscar® nominated performance that marked a career turning point toward complex adult roles) is a teenager eager to do what’s right in her 1920s Kansas town. But the emotions she shares with boyfriend Bud (Warren Beatty’s screen debut) are too strong. Soon the conflict between respectable behavior and human desire will push Bud to a physical collapse…and Deanie to madness. Director Elia Kazan encouraged Pulitzer-Prize winner William Inge (Bus Stop, Picnic) to turn a true story he heard during his Midwest youth into an Academy Award®-winning screenplay. The result, Splendor in the Grass remains as poetic, penetrating and powerful today as it was decades ago.

Excellent! Was hoping this would be the next 4k release though.

That is surprising, isn’t it? I wonder if George’ll mention why they didn’t do for a 4K on The Extras.

I guess it’s disappointing that this isn’t a 4K release, but I’m just happy to finally be able to retire the old dvd. I’m sure it’ll still look great.

And no one has this in stock? What's the deal with the WB releases? I don't understand. You used to be able to get them upon release day.

Was this doc included in another release? I have vague memories of watching a doc with Kazan commenting on his filmography.

I think it’s also on the Streetcar Named Desire Blu-Ray.

How could this not get a 4k? Natalie Wood is absolutely gorgeous in this film, and everyone gives a great performance. Was really hoping this would get one, I feel like they are not doing some of these classics justice

Still no mention of Kazan selling out his fellow Hollywood friends and getting them blacklisted during the McCarthy trials. He was a real POS.

McCarthy had nothing to do with HUAC.

Well, you've mentioned it, now what? Everyone is dead and buried, his work remains, buy it or hit the bricks.

Yes and no. Yes, McCarthy had absolutely nothing to do with the HUAC or The Hollywood Ten.

However, there's also the argument that the HUAC wasn't working in a vacuum in 1952, when McCarthy arguably contributed more than anyone else to the Second Red Scare aka McCarthy Era.

Which leads us to Orson Welles and the related perception linking Kazan and McCarthy with his famous response when interviewed about Kazan decades later while in Paris:

Quote:
"Chère mademoiselle, you have chosen the wrong metteur en scène, because Elia Kazan is a traitor. He is a man who sold to McCarthy all his companions at a time when he could continue to work in New York at high salary, and having sold all his people to McCarthy, he then made a film called On the Waterfront which was a celebration of the informer."
While the audience applauded, Welles then said, "I have to add that he is a very good director."

At the Academy Awards it was fun to watch when Kazan recieved his honorary Oscar from Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro and and then the camera panned to the front row where Ed Harris and his wife Amy Madigan were sitting and they were pi$$ed off.

What Kazan did was not great but as the old saying goes about stones, being without sin and glass houses.

Splendor in the Grass is a classic and a really sad film.

On The Waterfront was Kazan's answer to his critics but it still remains an amazing film to me.

In many ways whatever you think is the greatest film of all time, well On The Waterfront probably equals it.
