Sony's new "Profile 2.0" Blu-ray Disc Players - Blu-ray Forum

Sony will be introducing two new Blu-ray Disc Players. One the first week of July 2008, Model# BDP-S350, which passes all high bit advanced audio codecs (like the Panasonic DMP-BD30) to an outboard decoder (Pre-Amp or Receiver) and will be Profile 2.0 for BD-Live. The other player, coming out the first week of August 2008, the BDP-S550, will incorperate all the high bit advanced audio codec decoders in the player and will also be Profile 2.0. Both are HDMI 1.3a, catagory 2 compliant (output). Load times are faster. Both will play CD's, but not SACD.

The tentative price points will be:

Sony BDP-S350 $ 349.99
Sony BDP-S550 $ 449.99

I thought the original post indicated profile 1.1. I will be stoked if the players are indeed 2.0.

You are both right! In a follow-up conversation with my Sony insider with Blu-ray products development last night, he did confirm these two players will be Profile 2.0 . The post reads exactly as my first post with the exception of adding in the Profile 2.0 BD-Live feature.

So if I have a Pioneer Elite 94 that does both DTS-HD and Dolby-HD I can get away with the Sony BDP-S350 $ 349.99 and not suffer any loss of features right?

this is great blu-ray is getting there shit together fast.
being a former hd dvd supportor im happy to see this happing so fast.
im happy with my sony bdp-s300.
i knew it was 1.0 and with all the firmwares it plays all the 1.1,2.0 discs so far.down the road i'll get another bd player,but for now im happy.

My brother in law just purchased a PS3 a couple days ago. It is listed as 2.0 in the systems information. Am I missing something here, or are PS3's coming out with 2.0 now.

Profiles and FW are two totally different things..

...but as with all off-player decoding you lose real-time mixing such as language/commentary/pip.

The main feature should play the same.
