Default Sony's Profile 2.0 Blu-ray Players - coming soon!

Sony will be introducing two new Blu-ray Disc Players. One the first week of July 2008, Model# BDP-S350, which passes all high bit advanced audio codecs (like the Panasonic DMP-BD30) to an outboard decoder (Pre-Amp or Receiver) and will be Profile 2.0 for BD-Live. The other player, coming out the first week of August 2008, the BDP-S550, will incorperate all the high bit advanced audio codec decoders in the player and will also be Profile 1.1. Both are HDMI 1.3a, catagory 2 compliant (output). Load times are faster. Both will play CD's, but not SACD.

The tentative price points will be:

Sony BDP-S350 $ 349.99
Sony BDP-S550 $ 449.99

ps: The term Sapphire was dropped from the Model designators!

Way to go, Sony! Prices aren't that bad, really. (Well, only if you think $99 is what a brand new Blu-ray player ought to cost!)

The introduction of new players will increase consumer choices. In addition, prices of current Blu-ray players will drop as a result of the introduction of new products. Great start to the day!

Just tell me the 550 will decode all the lossless formats and pump them out a 5.1 analog output, pretty please! If so, it shall be mine!

Yes, you can output Bitstream, Linear PCM (HDMI Out), or Analog 5.1 (via 6 RCA Jacks). [Jim]

Will these have an ethernet port like the PS3? I love my PS3 but I need those analog outputs.

Not being Profile 2.0 - I'm almost certain it will not have that feature set. [Jim]

The prices are great, but where are the BD Live players from the CES???

Can we expect more (S750/950 or S2100ES) for a autumn release? I canīt believe thatīs all from Sony for this year! The price from the S550 is too cheap for the next best Sony player...

Be patient . . . they have not yet announced their ES Blu-ray Disc Player yet. It will most likely be their Flagship piece, with 'all' the features! [Jim]

Great news for some, but Sony has really left a bitter taste in my mouth with the s300 as far as promised specs go.
Needless to say I was one of the people who pre-ordered the s300 2 months before its release when they stated that machine would be v1.3, only to find 500$ later that is was not.
If Sony offered some sort of incentive to people who pre-ordered the first machines that were supposedly v1.3 to "trade up" to the s350 or s550 (providing their claims aren't BS this time) then I would be excited. Other than that Panasonic has proven themselves and I will be upgrading to their BD50 instead.
