Twenty years ago, a little accident with a guillotine trick left magician Duke Duquesne’s wife/on-stage assistant without a head…and their baby daughter, Cassie, without a mother. Now, The Great Duquesne may have another trick up his sleeve. He dies, leaving Cassie a sizable inheritance if she spends seven nights in his spooky mansion. With a fearless young reporter by her side, Cassie braves terrors that could be the work of evil spirits. Or are they illusions dreamed up by Cassie’s dear demented dad? Connie Stevens, Dean Jones (in his pre-The Love Bug days) and Cesar Romero star in a creepy horrorfest that offers scares, screams, a return of that guillotine and Max Steiner’s (Gone with the Wind) penultimate score.

This is a cool little mid-60s spook fest. It's a bit tame by today's standards, however, its been a favorite of mine since I first watched it years ago on a late night Creature Feature-style show. Definitely picking this up.

There's a fun tribute to William Castle when a skeleton is rigged to swoop over (empty) theater seats, kind of a re-creation of Castle's Emergo gimmick for HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL.

I had the Dell movie comic book for GUILLOTINE when I was a kid. The comic discretely censored an image of decapitation that appears in the film.

Thanks for pointing that out about the tribute to William Castle. I've always seen this film as the type of movie that Vincent Price would have starred in. In some ways, it is very reminiscent of the type of movie that William Castle would have produced.

Two on a Guillotine Blu-ray

This is a pretty underappreciated (and unknown) horror flick—not a masterwork by any means, but it's quite fun and silly, ala House on Haunted Hill. I am impressed with Warner's transfer—it looks fantastic.

I'm still geeking out over the fact that this was directed by the William Conrad... the original Marshall Matt Dillon (when Gunsmoke was still a radio drama); the put-open narrator of Rocky and Bullwinkle; and TV's "Cannon" (among hundreds if not thousands of roles in TV, radio and movies).

My favorite film directed by William Conrad is the mystery thriller BRAINSTORM (1964). It's available as a MOD DVD from Warner Archives, and I wish Warner would release it as a Blu-ray.
