Default PS3 play lossless audio? Ture Dolby?

Tell me about the PS3 audio features. Does it play the latest and great in 1.3 HDMI sound? Lossless audio, true dolby etc or whatever?

I don't know much about sound. And which type of sound is the best again? (and does the PS3 paly it?)

The only audio the PS3 won't be able to do at all is the DTS-HD tracks. The best you'll get is standard DTS 5.1 (lossy).

It can do all the others, though if you want to listen to Dolby TrueHD you will have to have the PS3 decode it and send it to your receiver as PCM (the PS3 won't bitstream this).

Otherwise, your gold, and can plan on getting everything out of it except the DTS-HD.

This link should explain any questions you might have regarding audio formats and the PS3.

Hope this helps!

So is DTS-HD the best type of audio, or just another type that the PS3 won't play. I had thought that lossless(Dolby TrueHD) was the best and since I was going to get a separate receiver anyways, then it might work out.

Correct me if I am wrong but you HAVE to run HDMI from PS3 to your reciver to get Tru-HD. And yes DTS-MA is not available thru the PS3 YET. Rumor has it will be in an up comming patch.

As to whether it's the best or not, that's probably going to be a matter of preference. It's a master recording of the movie, so it can't be too shabby. But unless I'm missing something, it could be debated ad nauseum whether it's the best -- to each their own. But it is the only audio the PS3 can't handle as of yet.

As for Dolby TrueHD, again, how bad can it be? It's a compressed form of the lossless master, so it's going to be great. No doubts there.

As someone told me, buy yourself a receiver that's PCM 5.1 capable (that really seems like what you need based on your questions) and you'll be able to get what you want out of it. You're going to have to if you're talking about getting Dolby TrueHD anyways -- the PS3 can't bitstream that, it has to be sent LPCM (so the player will convert it to PCM and send it as that).

Yup. You can't send the HD audio via optical; it has to be via HDMI.

Plus the upgrade they have planned (rumored at least) this year will let the PS3 internally decode DTS-HD MA so eventually even that will no be a problem.
But till it is official I will just have to sit and wait and hope.

Weird thing is, SACDs will not play over anything BUT HDMI... found that out the hard way.
