the 505 does not process hdmi audio.

Its passthrough only...meaning you would need optical cable. Don't waste your money.

If price is a concern, look at the Sony STR-DG810 ($270)

It is 5.1 PCM capable.

You're awesome. Thanks, mate.

My next questions were going to be if anyone could suggest a price-effective receiver that was HDMI-capable that would let me get it all (excepting DTS-HD).

After perusing the forums for a while, had a feeling YOU would have my answer.

With everything else I've been buying lately for my toys, I need to cut cost wherever I can these days, or feel my wife's wrath.

OK, did some checking on the Sony and so far I like what I see. Thanks again!

My question now is just to make sure I understand:

So I buy the receiver and hook my PS3 up to it via HDMI (set the output on the PS3 to Linear PCM) so the PS3 is decoding and moving the signal through. I think I got that part...

Say for example I wanted to watch Superbad (love that flick! ) -- I got two options for tracks. I can listen in either PCM 5.1 (uncompressed), or, Dolby TrueHD. My understanding is that if I chose the latter, the PS3 converts it to a PCM signal and sends it through to the receiver.

I guess my confusion is this: if both are 5.1 PCM signals, don't they both sound exactly the same? Why choose one over the other? Personal preference? And if they DO both sound the same, why stick both on the same disc? Does the TrueHD mix have different sounds/bells/whistles added in other than what's in the master track, or maybe something taken away?

If I'm understanding right, the TrueHD is just a compressed lossless form of the PCM -- exact copy just compressed. Why have two versions of the same track on one disc?
