I would like to purchase an Onkyo 705 receiver but I live in Canada (Toronto/Mississauga) so the stores that carry them are slim
...does anyone know where I can purchase one for a reasonable price? I don't believe Future Shop or Best Buy carries them. my last ditch effort would be ebay, but i don't trust that too much because they may be selling me a refurbished one any help anyone? |

Audio/Video 2001 is where i got my 605. they had a HUGE selection of 7.1 receivers. This was in Brampton, Ontario. Greatest city ever...
![]() Anyway, Yeah. Audio/Video 2001. I cant tell you the price though since i got an insane deal on it for 399 since i know sombody that works there. ![]() Check it out. ![]() |

In all honesty... I strongly urge you to get the 605. Save the extra money and buy some movies or... maybe some better speakers. Im pretty sure that the only difference is that the 605 cant do 1080i through componant. Im sure your in HDMI though, so that shouldnt be a problem. It also has nothing to do with you if your going to 1080p anyway. You should check out the 605. ![]() but if you REALLY want the 705 for whatever reason, then try ebay. Maybe even Amazon? They tend to be hard to find anywhere in Canada. Heck, 7.1 receivers in general are impossible to find in Canada... Especially if you want a good price. Anyway, Yeah. Check out the 605 man. ![]() Im suprised there isnt a bunch of comments yet. Normally people jump at the onkyo threads. ![]() Last edited by X-Ninja; 02-12-2008 at 09:28 PM. |

I had the same issue. I bought my 805 from a company on ebay (unfortunately I believe this voids the Onkyo warranty I'm not too sure though). I managed to get a "warranty" from the seller though. How reliable it is i have no idea.
I figured the chance I took was worth the $500+ I saved. As for authorized Onkyo dealers here's the site that'll list them for you. http://onkyo.ca/locator.cfm Good luck, the only places I had were London Drugs (hehe no), Visions, and some other places. The prices were all over $1200 for the 805. |

![]() As for movies, WAR had some pretty good audio as well. ![]() My only problem is that at one point, it started shutting itself off repeatidly every 5 or 6 seconds whenever i went into Dolby Digital 5.1. Turned out my center speaker was unplugged. ![]() ![]() Actually... one more issue. The thing is HOT. Really hot! After leaving it on all night with the PS3 on, again, all night... It gets to the point where leaving something on top of the receiver could possibly melt... But you know, just dont put anything on it. Again though, besides that everything has been great. The menu is easy to navigate, it has no audio/video lag with the PS3 (and even if it did, its super easy to calibrate with the menu), it looks nice, has multiple connections for whatever i want, etc etc. One more complaint actually! I plugged the ps3 in through HDMI into the GAME slot... but... now where do i plug the wii in? There is no other "Video Game" place to plug in the wii. I had to map the wii to "VCR" (which i dont understand why thats even an option... Who would buy a 7.1 receiver and plug a VCR into it!? ![]() ![]() Um, thats about it... SQ i cant imagine being any better with the 705. PQ all looks the same as when i had the HDMI going straight into my TV. Its... its a good receiver. Just dont go blind buy thinking "the 705 is hundreds of dollars more! It MUST be better!" ...That doesnt always work. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

The only retailer that carries the higher end Onkyos is Top Choice Electronics in Woodbridge, On. Knowledgable people, good selection but they want $950 for the 705. Frikken ripoff city! $1249 for the 805.
![]() And these morons wonder why Audio shops in Canada are closing down. The dollars lets them buy gear cheaper, yet they think that people are suckers. I also love their excuse "You don't get a Canadian waranty". Umm, what does that have to do with the price? Also, the 705 is futureproof over the 605. It has better DACs for better quality sound, extra HDMI port, and preouts so you can add an amp later if you move to a bigger room that requires more power. |

For about 6 months prior to buying it, I was seeking the 805 in Canada myself. I couldn't find it for any less than $1400. I happened to be going through the U.S. and looked up some locations on my route and found it at numerous locations between $700 and $900.
Canadian prices are ridiculous on electronics!!! And, unfortunately, 99% of U.S. retail sites will not ship to Canada. OR, they will charge an arm and a leg for shipping PLUS you will be nailed for taxes at the border that will make the entire cost of the purchase more than the Canadian prices listed in store. It's a shitty situation. So, unless you happen to be going to the U.S. anytime soon and think that you can sneak it back into the country, the only option is really to fork out the Canadian prices. |

Even if I did end up paying tax and duty. A 13% duty tax plus 5% GST was only another $120 or so and that's being generous. That's still a huge improvement on the ridiculous prices in Canada. |
